Iconic Wedding Dresses That Truly Are Works of Art

Author: Robert Gombos

While we may dream of our wedding day since we are little girls, the wedding dress itself is where most women spend most of their daydreams. The day we wear a wedding dress is one of the few times in a woman’s life where she can indulge in a genuinely extravagant gown. Even if your wedding dress is only a simple, boho-chic style, you would be amazed at the amount of detail that goes into its construction.

Go to any wedding website, like JJ’s House or others, and you will see a vast array of artistic wedding dresses. From the most unadorned, knee-length sheath, to dramatic ball gowns, there’s a dress for everyone. However, there have been some truly astounding wedding dresses that, years later, we still can’t stop talking about. These dresses were truly works of art that changed the wedding industry and wedding fashion.

  1. Kate Middleton’s wedding dress

When the Duchess of Cambridge finally got her wedding, she got it in style. When marrying her prince, Kate Middleton wore a stunning wedding gown designed by Sarah Burton, creative director of Alexander McQueen. This long-sleeved, lace beauty was a perfect cross between traditional, royal gowns, and modern gowns. Made of ivory satin with an open V-neckline and lace sleeves and top, this dress launched a thousand like it the moment people saw her step from the carriage.

  1. Olivia Palermo’s wedding dress

American businesswoman and entrepreneur, Olivia Palermo, knows a thing or two about fashion. So when she showed up on her wedding in a three-piece wedding dress that completely bucked tradition—the world was floored. The Carolina Herrera ensemble was a cream colored, cashmere sweater, white shorts, and a white, tulle skirt with lace overlay. Fun, flirty, and fashion-forward, it started the trend of two-and three-piece wedding dresses.

When the fashion world’s darling got married, it was no surprise that her dress was as fashion-forward as its owner. From the girl who popularized heroin chic, Kate Moss sheer wedding dress was a champagne-toned dream. Rhinestones and metallic flourishes dotted the gown’s sheer skirt and sheer straps. Kate kept her hair down to add to the boho beauty of the entire look.

  1. Grace Kelly’s wedding dress

Another famous royal, the gorgeous Grace Kelly’s wedding dress was supposedly where Kate Middleton drew a lot of inspiration for her own dress. The stunning satin and lace ball gown has become one of the most iconic wedding dresses and continued to inspire brides to this day. Made by the costume department at MGM (Grace’s studio), the dress featured lace details, seed pearls, a long-sleeved bodice and a flared, ball gown skirt.

  1. Portia de Rossi’s wedding dress

Brides who hate white cheered when they saw Portia de Rossi’s wedding gown. The backless, tulle wonder was a warm shade of blush that made Portia’s tanned skin and blond hair pop. The halter-style dress was romantic and modern and played off wife Ellen’s suit. The mixture of the tight bodice with the sheer flared skirt is a look that we’ve seen replicated a thousand times over since their big day.
