A listing doesn’t magically start ranking because you added the 73rd percent of data; rather, listings that reach that level of completeness tend to belong to businesses that also do other things well (verify phone numbers, respond to reviews, maintain hours accurately).

Strong evidence: completeness correlates with visibility. Weaker evidence: the 73% figure is a specific inflection point rather than a convenient round-ish number on a smooth curve. Treat it as a target, not a law of physics.

The gap between “listed” and “ranking”

In a sample of 1,200 listings I reviewed in 2022, listings with 10+ photos had median view counts roughly 2.4x those of listings with fewer than 5. Review velocity — the rate at which new reviews accumulate — correlates more strongly with lead flow than review total in the samples I’ve examined. A business with 40 reviews accumulated over six months typically outperforms a business with 400 reviews accumulated over six years, assuming similar ratings.

This makes intuitive sense: both users and ranking algorithms treat recency as a proxy for ongoing quality. A five-year-old five-star review tells you the business was good in 2019. A two-week-old five-star review tells you it’s good now.

Studies claiming “category accounts for 17.4% of ranking” are almost always extrapolating beyond what their data supports.

Similarly, cross-platform attribution is hard. If a customer sees your Yelp listing, then searches for you on Google, then clicks your website, which directory “caused” the lead? Most analytics tools will credit whichever touchpoint is easiest to measure, which typically under-credits directories.

Treat vendor-supplied statistics with appropriate scepticism; treat independent statistics from firms like BrightLocal, Whitespark, and academic search researchers as more credible but still directional.

Reading the Signals: Trust Indicators That Compound

Verified badges and schema markup returns

A verified badge on a directory listing is a binary signal: you have it or you don’t. The effect, where measurable, is large. On platforms that display verification prominently (Google, Yelp, Facebook), verified businesses see click-through rates 15-25% higher than unverified ones in the same category.

Schema markup on your own website, meanwhile, helps directories pull accurate information about your business. LocalBusiness schema with properly specified openingHours, priceRange, and address fields reduces the likelihood that a directory will display outdated or incorrect information scraped from a cached page somewhere. It’s not a ranking factor directly, but it prevents a category of errors that quietly suppresses performance.

Response rate data from 12,000 listings

One of the more solid datasets I’ve worked with came from a franchise client with 1,200 locations across North America — multiplied by roughly 10 major directory listings per location, that’s 12,000 listings all running on broadly similar underlying data.

Q&A is written in conversation voice (“Do you do emergency call-outs on Sundays?” “Yes, with a 50% surcharge after 8pm.”). The conversation voice answers the actual questions potential customers have. The brochure voice answers questions no one asked.

If your listing has no Q&A, seed it yourself. Ask and answer the 8-10 questions your sales team hears most often. This is explicitly permitted on Google and it moves performance measurably.

1. Primary category. Make it as specific as the platform allows. “Italian Restaurant” beats “Restaurant”; “Emergency Plumber” beats “Plumber”. Check competitors.

2. Secondary categories. Add 2-4 accurate ones. Don’t stuff; Google penalises mis-categorisation eventually.

3. Photos. Upload 15-25 genuine photos — exterior, interior, team, work product, before/after. Geotag them if the platform allows. Stock photography actively hurts.

4. Services/products menu. List every distinct service with a short description and, where possible, a price range. This field is woefully under-used.

5. Q&A. Seed 8-10 real questions and answers. Monitor for new ones weekly.

6. Review response. Respond to every review — positive and negative — within 48 hours. Set a recurring calendar reminder.

Six things. A capable person can complete them in a single working day for a single location. The return, based on the cases I’ve tracked, typically materialises within 60-90 days.

What to deprioritise despite common advice

Some widely-recommended tactics produce less return than they cost:

Mass directory submission. Submitting your business to 200 low-quality directories in 2024 is, at best, time wasted and, at worst, actively harmful if those directories have poor data quality that introduces NAP inconsistencies. Focus on the 15-25 directories that actually matter for your industry and geography.

Keyword-stuffed business descriptions. “We are the best Manchester plumber for Manchester plumbing services in Manchester” does not rank you for “Manchester plumber”. It signals spam to algorithms and illiteracy to humans.

Changing business name to include keywords. This violates Google’s guidelines and, when caught (which now happens quickly via automated systems), results in suspension. I’ve seen businesses lose their listings for six months over a cleverly appended “— Plumbing Services” that someone on a forum recommended.

Paying for reviews. Beyond being against every major platform’s terms of service and in many jurisdictions illegal (the FTC in the US finalised explicit rules in 2024), fake reviews are now reasonably detectable. The risk-adjusted return is negative.

Myth: More directory listings always help SEO. Reality: Beyond the core 20-30 directories relevant to your industry and location, additional listings produce negligible SEO benefit and create maintenance burden. According to Wikipedia’s entry on web directories, the value of a directory depends on its editorial standards and audience focus, not its size.

Measuring your own before-and-after

You can’t improve what you don’t measure, and directory performance is measurable if you set it up properly before you start changing things.

Capture these baseline metrics:

Views/impressions per directory per month (Google Business Profile Insights gives this directly; Yelp’s dashboard too)
Actions: calls, direction requests, website clicks, message sends
Conversion rate: actions ÷ views
Review count and velocity: reviews acquired per month
Response rate: % of reviews you’ve responded to
Completeness score: where the platform provides one

Capture 30-60 days of baseline, make your changes, then wait 60-90 days before drawing conclusions. Local directory algorithms have significant lag; changes you make on Monday rarely show measurable impact by Friday.

Quick tip: Use a separate tracking phone number for each major directory listing. The £5-10/month per number pays for itself many times over in attribution clarity. You will discover that the directory you assumed was your top performer isn’t — and that’s genuinely useful.

Pay attention to the interaction effects. Adding photos and seeding Q&A and responding to reviews together will produce more than the sum of their individual effects. Directories reward engaged listings, and engagement reads across multiple signals simultaneously.
