Run that process for five years without editorial discipline and your “Financial Services” page becomes indistinguishable from a Google search result — which means users stop coming to you, because they could just use Google.

The comparison I come back to is the difference between aggregation and curation: “A news feed that pulls every article tagged ‘marketing’ is aggregation. A weekly email that selects the five most important marketing developments and explains why each one matters is curation.” Your category taxonomy is either the five-most-important list, or it’s the tag dump. Sometimes the business requires speed. A 48-hour SLA is achievable without abandoning editorial standards, but it changes the workflow in three specific ways.

First, you need the automated triage layer described above — without it, human reviewers can’t keep pace. Second, you need a documented “probationary approval” tier: listings that pass initial review but remain on a 30-day watch where post-publication signals (user clicks, complaints, update frequency) can trigger a re-review. Third, you need an on-call editorial escalation path so that genuinely difficult judgement calls don’t pile up behind the SLA clock.

I’ve run directories at 48-hour SLA with a team of three. It works, but you spend about 25% of your editorial time on post-publication correction rather than pre-publication gatekeeping. The ratio isn’t wrong — it just shifts where the work sits. I’d avoid going below 48 hours; at 24 hours, the quality drops sharply because second looks become a luxury rather than a practice.

Quick tip: If your SLA is forcing editorial corners to be cut, publish the SLA prominently on your submission page along with the rejection rate. Counterintuitively, transparent standards attract better submissions. Bad actors avoid directories that publish their own scrutiny metrics.

If you run a directory and you’ve been quietly wondering whether the automation you bought three years ago is actually doing the job, the answer is almost certainly no — not because the tools are bad, but because the problem they’re solving isn’t the problem that matters. Fraud detection is tablestakes. Editorial judgement is the product.

The directories that will still be here in 2030 are the ones that treat every listing as a small editorial decision — one whose cumulative weight determines whether users and advertisers keep coming back. The ones that don’t will be absorbed into the background noise of the open web, indistinguishable from a poorly maintained subreddit.

Start by auditing your own rejection rate. If it’s under 10%, you probably have a curation problem. Pull thirty listings at random from your “approved” pile next Monday morning, and run them through the checklist I described. You’ll find at least three that shouldn’t be there. What you do about those three will tell you what kind of directory you’re actually running.
