The Correlation Between Business Directory Authority and Referral Traffic Quality

Founder-led sales, two SDRs, a marketing manager who was doing the work of three people. Classic mid-stage SaaS: enough traction to be dangerous, not enough to be comfortable.

They came to me because their pipeline from organic and referral sources had plateaued for five consecutive months. Not dropped — plateaued. Which, if you’ve been in a growing company, you’ll know feels worse than a decline. A decline you can dramatise. A plateau just sits there, unbothered.

Monthly traffic numbers that triggered the audit

Here’s what the GA4 dashboard looked like the week I was brought in:

  • Organic: 11,400 sessions/month
  • Direct: 4,200 sessions/month
  • Referral: 2,880 sessions/month
  • Demo requests: 34/month (average of prior six months)
  • Demo-to-SQL rate: 41%

Referral traffic was the third-largest source. On paper, healthy. But when you cracked open the referral channel by source and overlaid engagement data, something started smelling off. About 62% of that referral traffic was arriving from directory listings they’d paid for over the previous eighteen months. The referral quality gap we spotted first

Pulling DR scores alongside GA4 engagement data

I pulled three things for every referring directory:

  2. GA4 engagement data: session duration, pages per session, engaged sessions rate
  3. CRM attribution: demo requests tied back to first-touch or assisted-touch from that source

Then I sorted by DR, descending, and put bounce rate next to it. The expected pattern — higher DR, better engagement — didn’t show up. In fact, the highest-DR directories had some of the worst engagement metrics in the entire referral set. The top three by DR (all 75+) had an average bounce rate of 71% and session duration under 30 seconds.

The session duration pattern that surprised us

Two directories in the portfolio had DR scores under 50. One was at DR 45 — a vertical compliance directory. The other was at DR 38 — a newer industry publication with a built-in vendor directory. Their session durations averaged 3 minutes 14 seconds and 2 minutes 52 seconds respectively. Their bounce rates were 39% and 44%.

More importantly, those two DR-sub-50 directories had generated 11 of the previous quarter’s 28 directory-attributed demo requests. Between them, they accounted for 14% of directory referral traffic but 39% of directory-attributed demos.

That’s the gap. That’s the whole article, really. But let’s keep going because the why matters more than the what.

Separating vanity authority from contextual authority

Domain Rating measures one thing: the aggregate strength of a site’s backlink profile. It says nothing — zero, nil, nowt — about whether the audience on that site cares about your specific offering. A DR-80 general business directory with 4 million monthly visitors might send you 200 referrals a month, but if 195 of them are small-business owners looking for a bookkeeper and you sell enterprise compliance software, you’ve paid for a very expensive coincidence.

In our case, the specific factor wasn’t authority. It was audience-offer match. DR was a proxy so loose it was actively misleading.

Myth: Higher domain rating means higher-quality referral traffic. Reality: DR measures the referring site’s backlink profile, not whether its audience matches yours. In Cartograph’s data, the correlation between DR and demo-request rate was slightly negative.

The Tier Decision: Where We Cut and Where We Doubled Down

This is the part of the engagement where I have to earn my fee. Up to now, I’d been analysing. Now I had to recommend actions that would either save the client money or cost me the relationship.

Dropping 14 high-DR generalist directories

Across the portfolio, there were 21 active directory listings. Fourteen were generalist high-DR listings with annual costs ranging from £180 to £2,200. Combined annual spend: £9,840. Combined demo contribution over the prior 12 months: 9 demos, 2 of which converted to SQL, zero closed-won.

That’s £9,840 for zero revenue. I recommended cancelling all fourteen. The marketing manager — bless her — asked the question I’d been dreading: “But won’t we lose the backlinks?”

Maybe. Possibly. But here’s the thing: if the referral traffic from those links wasn’t converting, and the SEO value was uncertain (the client ranked organically on strength of their content programme, not their backlink profile), then we were paying a £9,840 insurance premium against a risk nobody had quantified. I’ve paid that premium before myself. Ten years ago I kept a directory subscription going for 26 months past the point it made sense because I was afraid of cancelling. That’s not strategy. That’s superstition.

Keeping two DR-45 niche listings that outperformed

The two sub-50 DR vertical directories stayed. No negotiation. They were the best-performing sources in the entire referral channel on every quality metric. Combined annual cost: £1,400. Combined demo contribution: 11 demos, 6 SQLs, 2 closed-won at £14k ACV each.

So: £1,400 in, £28,000 out. That’s the kind of ROI that makes CFOs briefly cheerful.

The $2,400 we reallocated to industry-specific platforms

We took roughly $2,400 (about £1,900 at the time) from the cancelled generalist budget and redirected it into three new placements:

  • A compliance-focused industry publication with a paid vendor directory (£900/year)
  • A regional finance operations community with a sponsor listing (£600/year)

If a directory can’t show you one closed-won deal — or at minimum a credible pipeline contribution — over 18 months, you’re not cancelling a marketing channel. You’re cancelling a habit.

Watching the Traffic Quality Shift

I set up a weekly dashboard for the marketing manager and we tracked the changes over the following 90 days. I’ll be honest: I expected to see improvement in months two and three. What we actually saw in week three caught me off guard.

The DR-38 industry publication directory — the one I’d almost recommended cutting because the domain rating looked frankly embarrassing — turned into the highest-converting referral source in the entire Cartograph portfolio. By week 10 it was outperforming even their branded search terms on demo-to-SQL rate.

Why? Because its audience was, almost entirely, finance operations managers at companies of exactly the right size. The directory was small, niche, and genuinely useful to its readers. A referral click from that site had already been filtered through a relevant editorial context. The “authority” of the site didn’t come from backlinks — it came from the reader’s pre-existing trust in the publication.

Principles That Transferred Across Clients

I’ve now run versions of this audit for about a dozen clients across B2B SaaS, professional services, and — in one painful case — a specialty food manufacturer. The specifics vary. The underlying principles have been remarkably consistent.

Why audience match beats domain rating

If I could only tell a client one thing about directory strategy, it would be this: pick directories based on who reads them, not based on what tools like Ahrefs or Moz say about them. Domain Rating is a proxy metric invented by SEO tool vendors. It was never designed to predict commercial outcomes for your business. It was designed to be a convenient shorthand for link-building prospecting.

Using DR to select directories is like choosing a restaurant based on how many seats it has. The information is accurate but almost entirely irrelevant to whether you’ll enjoy your dinner.

The “third listing” diminishing returns curve

One pattern I’ve now seen enough times to commit to: within any single category of directory (general business, local, vertical-specific, review-driven), the third listing you add almost always underperforms the first two by a substantial margin. And the fourth? Forget it.

I don’t have a peer-reviewed study to back this up — I have my own client data across roughly 40 engagements. But the pattern is strong enough that I now tell clients: pick your best two directories per category. Then stop. Take the money you would have spent on directories three through seven and put it into something that compounds — content, email nurture, an actual customer reference programme.

Myth: More directory listings equals more visibility and more traffic. Reality: After the first two well-chosen listings in any category, you’re mostly buying redundant impressions to overlapping audiences. If you only have $500 to test

Five hundred dollars is a stressful budget. It’s also more than enough to learn something useful if you’re disciplined.

With $500, don’t spread it across five listings. Pick one paid directory — ideally a vertical one with editorial review — and one free listing with a strong claim process (Google Business Profile if you’re local-facing; otherwise the leading free directory in your vertical). Spend the full $500 on the paid placement and commit to measuring it for 90 days before deciding anything.

Set up UTM parameters on the listing’s outbound link. Put conversion tracking on your demo form. At the end of 90 days, you’ll either have evidence that vertical directories work for you (expand) or evidence they don’t (reallocate to paid search or content). Either answer is worth $500.

What you absolutely should not do with $500 is buy five $100 generalist listings. That’s how you end up with data so thin it can’t tell you anything — exactly the trap Servcorp warns about when they note that correlation analysis requires sufficient data volume before you can rely on it.

Running this in a regulated industry

I once did a directory audit for a financial adviser. In regulated industries — healthcare, finance, legal — the directory selection criteria change in two important ways. First, you need directories whose moderation policies are strict enough that your listing won’t sit next to obviously non-compliant competitors, because regulators do notice context. Second, you need directories where the editorial process allows you to include the specific regulatory disclosures your compliance team requires, without mangling them into meaninglessness.

What if… your industry has no vertical directories worth listing in? It happens — especially in emerging categories. In that case, I shift budget toward community sponsorships (industry newsletters, podcasts, Slack communities) that function like directories but aren’t structured as such. The mechanism is the same: pre-qualified audience, editorial trust, contextual authority. The label doesn’t matter.

Compressing the timeline from 90 to 30 days

Sometimes a client can’t wait 90 days. A board meeting’s coming. A funding round is closing. The marketing director needs a win by the end of the quarter or someone’s getting a difficult one-to-one.

In those situations, I compress the audit phase hard. Instead of exporting 18 months of data, I take the last 90 days and accept the increased noise. Instead of testing new directories, I only make cuts — because cuts deliver immediate budget savings that are easy to present, and they’re almost always directionally correct. Adding new directories within a 30-day window rarely produces statistically meaningful data, but cancelling underperformers produces a clean reduction in spend with no downside risk.

The trade-off is that you don’t discover the upside. You just stop bleeding. For a 30-day timeline, that’s usually the right call. You can run the upside experiments in the next quarter once you’ve bought yourself some credibility.

Quick tip: If you’re in a 30-day window, the fastest defensible win is almost always cancelling a high-cost directory that can’t show a single closed-won attribution in the last 12 months. You’ll get the budget back, the risk is minimal, and the conversation with finance is short.

What changes if you’re very small or very local

If you’re a local services business turning over less than £250,000 a year, the economics are different again. Your directory strategy is probably 80% Google Business Profile, 15% one or two trusted local or vertical directories, and 5% everything else. The audit approach still works — you just have fewer sources to audit, and the metric that matters most is direction enquiries and phone calls rather than demo requests.

I’ve seen local businesses waste ludicrous amounts of money on “featured listing” upgrades in directories their customers have never heard of. The local equivalent of the generalist DR trap. If your customers aren’t using a directory, its authority score is irrelevant to you.

First: attribution is always partially wrong. Some of the “wins” I credited to vertical directories were almost certainly multi-touch journeys where the directory was the final nudge rather than the original discovery. I’m fine with that — first-touch obsession is its own pathology — but if you’re looking for surgical precision, you won’t find it in any referral analysis, including mine.

Second: the pattern I described (lower-DR vertical directories beating generalist giants) holds strongly in B2B and in specialist B2C. It holds less reliably in commodity consumer categories where sheer traffic volume and brand familiarity of the directory can matter more. If you sell pet food, the rules bend. If you sell enterprise software, they hold.

Third — yes I said two, but here’s a third — the correlations I’m describing are not peer-reviewed science. They’re patterns I’ve seen across client engagements, triangulated with CRM data. A proper academic study would require control variables, bigger samples, and methodological rigour I don’t pretend to. What I offer is a practitioner’s pattern-matching, which is worth exactly what practitioners’ pattern-matching is usually worth: enough to act on, not enough to stake your doctoral thesis on.

Where to Take This Next

If you’re staring at a directory portfolio right now and wondering whether to start cutting, here’s the order I’d work in. Pull the last 12 to 18 months of referral data. Match it against your CRM by source. Calculate demo-per-session (or enquiry-per-session) for each directory. Sort that column. Look at the bottom half. Cancel anything that hasn’t produced a meaningful commercial outcome in 12 months, and reallocate half the savings into one or two vertical placements you’d genuinely want to be associated with. Measure for a quarter. Then do it again.

The clients I work with who treat directory spend as a recurring audit rather than a set-and-forget subscription consistently outperform the ones who don’t. The ones who chase DR scores because they’re legible to the board will, in five years, still be wondering why their referral traffic isn’t converting. Don’t be that team. Pick the directory where your actual buyer is already reading, commit to measuring what happens, and let the DR score be someone else’s problem.
