Although born in Zanzibar in 1954, Lubaina Himid was relocated to Britain when she was only four months old following the death of her father. She first made her name in the 1980s as one of the leaders of the British black arts movement, and in December 2017 made history as both the oldest and the first black artist to be awarded the Turner prize for art, which was awarded for her work in addressing racial politics and the legacy of slavery.
