Tonga National University is the national university of the Kingdom of Tonga, with its head office on Fatafehi Road at Pahu in Nukualofa. The institution takes its name from the Tonga National University Act 2021 and has operated since 2023. His Majesty King Tupou VI is its Chancellor and head, and Dr Giulio Masasso Tuikolongahau Paunga holds the post of Vice-Chancellor.
The university motto is Truth, Justice, Freedom. Teaching, administration and publications work in both Tongan and English.
Formation from six state institutions
The university was formed by bringing together the six higher education institutions previously run directly by the Government of Tonga. These were the Tonga Institute of Education, the Tonga Institute for Higher Education, the Tonga Institute of Science and Technology, the Tonga Maritime Polytechnic Institute, the Queen Salote Institute of Nursing and Allied Health and the Tonga Police College. Five of the six have completed the merger, while the police college may join at a later stage. The consolidation placed teacher training, technical education, maritime instruction and nursing under a single administration for the first time. Nursing and midwifery education begun under the Queen Salote institute carries on within the new structure.
Tonga National University is registered by the Tonga National Qualification and Accreditation Board as a post-compulsory education and training provider. The board oversees qualification standards for post-compulsory education and training throughout the kingdom, and the university described its registration as a significant step in institutional development.
Faculties and schools
Teaching is organised through four faculties and twelve schools, which together deliver 55 academic and vocational programmes ranging from certificates and diplomas to degrees and postgraduate awards. New awards continue to be added year by year.
- Business and Public Administration, with schools of Accountancy and of Tourism and Hospitality Management
- Education, Art and Humanities, with schools of Education, of Media and Journalism, of Tongan Language and Culture, and the Tuuloa Open Access school
- Nursing and Health Science, with schools of Health Sciences and of Nursing and Midwifery
- Science and Technology, with schools of Agriculture Sciences, of Information and Communication Technology, of Science and Technology, and the maritime schools
Tongan language and culture
As the only national university in the country, the institution treats the preservation of Tongan traditions as part of its statutory duty. The School of Tongan Language and Culture offers a degree programme in the Tongan language and culture, introduced among the university's new awards, and the founding Act directs the university to promote research into subjects of significance to Tonga. Course materials give equal standing to the Tongan and English languages.
Maritime and technical training
The maritime schools carry on the work of the former Tonga Maritime Polytechnic Institute, preparing seafarers for service on domestic vessels and foreign fleets. Trade and technology courses descend from the Tonga Institute of Science and Technology, and agriculture sciences address the farming and fisheries base of the national economy.
Mandate under the founding Act
The objectives set for the university include preserving, extending and spreading knowledge through teaching, research, scholarship and consultancy. It must provide academic, technical and vocational training responsive to the needs of the people of Tonga, facilitate economic and social development through educational pathways, and support innovation and the sustainable use of resources. Academic and vocational programmes are directed to promote knowledge of the Tongan language and culture through focused research, teaching and publications. The Act also commits the institution to intellectual independence, to operation grounded in Tongan values, to the pursuit of the highest standards in teaching and research, and to an educational system that is accessible, inclusive, relevant and sustainable. Progress against these objectives is reported through an annual corporate plan.
Qualifications may extend from certificate level to post-doctorate as the university matures. Climate resilience and respect for the environment are named in its academic policies as recurring themes across programmes. Published core values include integrity, respect and care, excellence and professionalism, diligence, and accountability, while the vision and mission statements frame the university's work in terms of service to God and to Tonga.
Students and services
Students work through the Moodle online learning platform and draw on the university library, a student handbook, an academic calendar and an IT support desk. Admissions guidance, scholarship and financial aid information and the schedule of tuition and fees are published for each intake, and applications open ahead of each academic year through the admissions pages. Separate portals collect online resources for staff and for students, a research section reports on university projects, and a volunteer registration channel is open to people offering time and expertise.
In his welcome message the Vice-Chancellor observes that studying in Tonga lets students stay close to family and community networks while contributing to the local economy and workforce. The head office in Nukualofa answers general enquiries by telephone on a fixed line and a mobile number, with email handled through the general administration office.
