Feno, produced by Feno Labs, is a U-shaped 'smart' toothbrush that cleans all your teeth at once in around 20 seconds, instead of the usual two minutes. The TrueFit mouthpiece has around 18,000 bristles, compared to the roughly 2,500 on a standard toothbrush, and comes in seven sizes, chosen based on a scan of your mouth. The company recommends replacing it every three months, and the first two size changes are free if the first one doesn't fit properly.

It requires minimal effort: simply hold the brush in your mouth and move it slowly in a circular motion whilst the device is running. The battery lasts about a week, charging is magnetic, and the charging dock keeps everything together. The website states that the brush head performs 250 movements in 20 seconds and that the company's internal tests have shown almost complete removal of bacterial plaque within a few days, with the honest disclaimer that results are not guaranteed.

What sets it apart from other electric toothbrushes is the built-in scanner: it takes photos of the teeth, gums and tongue, and the app analyses the images, calculates an oral health score, tracks progress from week to week and answers questions via an AI assistant. The reports can also be sent to the dentist. The app also links oral health to general health risks, such as heart disease or diabetes – a correlation that the website supports with figures from studies, without promising any diagnoses.

The Feno Plus subscription is optional and can be cancelled at any time, and the toothbrush works even without the app. The scanner's data is encrypted and protected by a separate privacy chip, which blocks remote access. In my opinion, this is a welcome feature for a product which, after all, has a camera inside your mouth.

The website offers three packages, which combine the toothbrush with Feno Foam, a tongue scraper and, in the top-of-the-range version, a salivary microbiome test. The foam contains xylitol for enamel and wild mint for freshness, and is designed to spread evenly across all the bristles at once, although any standard toothpaste works just as well. There are two consumables to bear in mind: the foam and the mouthpiece.
