Being an independent artist is hard work these days. You have to make the art, then sell it, then promote yourself, all at once. In practice you are running a small business, and sales and promotion are a big part of it. You will need a strategy for turning attention into income. That may not come naturally, but it is not as difficult as it looks. Once you start, you will find it is manageable, and the habits build on each other.<\/p>\n
The good news is that the tools for reaching buyers have never been more open. David Meerman Scott has argued across eight editions of The New Rules of Marketing and PR (2022) that the web replaced the old model of buying attention through ads or begging for coverage: any organisation, however small, can now earn attention by publishing useful things that people find when they search. For an artist, that means your work and your story can do the reaching for you, if you make them findable.<\/p>\n
This is the basic, time honoured route, and it still works. You need to be exhibited to get noticed and to make those important sales. Showing your work is a simple thing to do, and it is also how you become part of the local scene. So exhibit your own pieces, but also visit as many of your contemporaries’ shows as you can. If you support them, you can reasonably hope for the same in return.<\/p>\n
If you are unsure how to begin, look for a solid guide to setting up an exhibition and follow it closely. Put the effort in. If it is a joint exhibition, include your fellow exhibitors fully, make sure everyone has a good experience, and keep the spirit of the art community alive. Reputations in a local scene are built on how you treat other people, not just on what hangs on the wall.<\/p>\n
You cannot run or promote anything now without an online presence, and a working artist is no different from any other small business. Start with a website. There are two broad ways to do this. You can use a website host and builder such as GoDaddy, which gets you a basic site for relatively little. Or you can hire a professional designer to build a bespoke site fitted to your requirements. Either way, keep the pages easy to scan. Jakob Nielsen’s early study of how people read on the web (1997) found that 79% of users scan any new page they land on while only 16% read word by word, which is why clear headings, short paragraphs, and highlighted keywords help visitors find what they came for.<\/p>\n
You also want a social media presence. Instagram matters most because it is so visual, but do not forget Facebook for building a following, and Twitter for starting conversations (or arguments, if you are so inclined) and for announcements about exhibitions and shows. Treat these as ways to send people back to your own site, where you control the sale.<\/p>\n
Then you need a way to sell online. One option is an online store attached to your website, which lets you capitalise on interest you generate there. Another is to use an online vendor that sells prints. This is easy: upload digital versions of your work, and they sell wall art worldwide through their own platform. You receive a commission without doing the sales work yourself. There is a real pleasure in knowing that through a method like this, someone you will never meet ends up with a piece of your art in their daily life.<\/p>\n
Selling online is not only about setting up a shop. People need to find you and decide you are worth buying from before they ever reach a checkout. Both of those steps depend on visibility in places buyers already look. Louis Rosenfeld, Peter Morville, and Jorge Arango, in Information Architecture: For the Web and Beyond (2015), make the point that how information is organised, labelled, and categorised determines whether people can find it at all, and that browsing structured categories and searching are complementary ways users locate what they need. A curated directory listing, a well tagged portfolio, and a clean site all pull in the same direction: they make you discoverable to someone who does not yet know your name. Being present in a place a human editor has vetted also lends a small measure of trust, which matters when a buyer is deciding whether to send money to an artist they have never met.<\/p>\n
