The difference between the advertised price and the actual cost is where most traders lose money before opening their first position. Many budget for the evaluation fee and only discover, after passing the test, that a second payment was waiting for them.

The method proposed here has three stages: each firm undergoes what might be called the ‘four-fee test’, its rules are compared with one’s own trading behaviour, and payment is only made at the very end. The result is a shortlist of firms whose terms and conditions are fully understood, rather than a payment page full of surprises.

Why the payment page is the wrong place to start

Most buyers choose these firms in reverse order. They find a discount code on a Tuesday, visit the website and start comparing the terms only after they have already paid, and the withdrawal conditions then turn out to be stricter than the marketing copy suggested.

Data from regulatory authorities justifies caution. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has repeatedly warned that unregistered firms offering trading opportunities may misrepresent their profit potential and past performance, and its consumer warning regarding trading system fraud (trading system fraud) notes that fraudsters frequently combine grandiose promises with very little documentation. In this niche, the documentation is precisely what is being bought, and verifying it costs nothing.

The verification process therefore begins with the documents, before any other considerations. The key question is what you should check before sending $200 to a stranger on the internet, and the answer indicates exactly what you should ask the firm for.

The four-fee test

Every company hides its costs in four places, and all four must be identified before making any other comparisons.

Assessment fee: how much does a $50,000 account cost at the list price, and how much does it cost with the discount code being promoted that week?

The activation fee: how much is payable after the trial promotion? This is the fee people tend to overlook, and the reason why the total average cost up to the funded account exceeds the trial price by such a large margin.

Reset and renewal fee: what happens if the account is lost, and what happens if, after three months, the trader is still paying the monthly subscription?

Payment friction: what matters here, more than the percentage of profit, is the waiting time – that is, the number of trading days that must pass before the first withdrawal even becomes eligible.

A firm with a higher fee but clear terms and conditions, published in full, is always preferable to a cheap one with an unclear activation clause, because a low price is merely an advantage, whilst clarity is a prerequisite.

Marketing, in turn, adds an invisible fee. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) regularly publishes research on consumer behaviour (consumer research publications), and in December 2024 it adopted a rule on unfair or deceptive charges, effective from May 2025, which requires sellers of event tickets and short-term accommodation to display the total price from the outset. The rule does not apply to prop trading firms, but it describes precisely the mechanism by which a displayed price followed by a hidden fee alters what the buyer believes they are paying. Discount codes work in the same way, and a ‘permanent discount’ is, in reality, the standard price.

What the research says about split pricing

The effect described by the four-fee test was measured experimentally nearly three decades ago. In 1998, Vicki Morwitz, Eric Greenleaf and Eric Johnson published the study ‘Divide and Prosper’ in the Journal of Marketing Research, in which they compared prices presented as a single amount with prices split into a base amount and an additional charge, such as the cost of postage for mail-order purchases. Participants who saw the price split subsequently recalled a lower total cost than the actual one and were, under certain conditions, more willing to buy, as they tended to anchor their assessment to the base amount and adjust insufficiently for the added charge.

In 2009, Glenn Ellison and Sara Fisher Ellison documented the same logic in a real-world market in *Econometrica*. They analysed sellers of computer memory competing on a price comparison website and found that, in a market where the displayed price determined ranking, firms employed obfuscation strategies: low-quality products displayed at very low prices to attract clicks, followed by more expensive offers and additional costs revealed only on the product page. The prop trading market has a similar structure, as comparison sites and discount codes compete precisely on the listed price, whilst activation fees, rollovers and payment terms are disclosed later.

For a trader, the practical implication is a simple calculation rule: the figure compared across firms should be the total cost up to the first eligible withdrawal, including an honest estimate of the number of resets, rather than the listed price. A spreadsheet with a column for each of the four fees makes this comparison in a matter of minutes and eliminates the advantage that the displayed price has over memory.

The framework has limitations that need to be acknowledged. Ajay Abraham and Rebecca Hamilton published a meta-analysis in 2018, also in the Journal of Marketing Research, of 149 observations from 27 papers, which showed that the advantage of split pricing depends on the context: it is particularly evident when the total price is not displayed, and the effect varies depending on how common and justified the additional charge appears to be within that category. Ellison and Ellison studied a single market with relatively homogeneous products, and experienced traders, who are accustomed to calculating risk, may be less susceptible to this effect than participants in laboratory experiments. The research describes a strong trend, without proving that every buyer is misled by every separately displayed charge.

What, specifically, do the rules do to the strategy

The consistency rules represent the biggest structural change in this market and subtly alter the way traders size their positions. Such a rule limits the proportion of total profit that can be generated in a single trading day, usually between 20 per cent and 40 per cent, and exceeding this threshold can result in a profitable week being blocked from payout.

A few honest questions help here: does the trader trade on the news? Do they open a large position and hold it for several days? If the answer is yes, a firm with a strict consistency rule will frustrate them, however attractive the offer may seem. The rules must be tailored to the trader’s actual behaviour, rather than the idealised image they have of themselves.

Maximum permitted loss: the discrete risk

The loss limit calculated at the end of the day is much more lenient than the one tracking the account during the day, as the account balance is only updated after the session closes. The limit that tracks the account’s peak during the day moves in line with unrealised profit, so a position that is in profit but then reverses can deplete the available margin. For those who hold positions during volatile periods, the end-of-day option is more suitable, whilst for those who engage in rapid, tight scalping, the intraday option may not be an issue. The choice requires the trader to know what sort of trader they are.

How to verify a firm’s documents in 20 minutes

The practical part is simple. Open the firm’s website in one tab, and in another tab open the National Futures Association’s BASIC registration check tool (BASIC registration check), which the NFA has been using for years to confirm who is registered with the CFTC. Then go through the list below.

Find the risk disclosure statement. If it is hidden beneath three marketing pop-ups, this says something about the firm.

Search for the firm’s name in the NFA database and confirm its registration status, if any.

Read the withdrawal terms twice, then the clause regarding changes to the rules during a review.

Check whether the activation fee is listed on the pricing page or only in the general terms and conditions.

Look for a named founder and a real company address, as anonymity is a warning sign.

None of these checks guarantees a firm’s reliability, but together they weed out firms that rely on the fact that nobody is looking.

What the NFA register cannot show

The BASIC search has a limitation that many guides fail to explain. Most futures prop trading firms sell performance reviews and offer simulated trading accounts, so they do not usually fall into the categories of intermediaries for which CFTC registration is mandatory. An unsuccessful search in BASIC is therefore not in itself a sign of fraud, and a successful search does not guarantee that the product sold to the trader is the one covered by the registration. The register confirms an entity’s legal status, without confirming that its business model is regulated.

This raises a number of questions that any trader might ask before making a payment. Is the ‘funded’ account a real account, connected to the market, or a simulated account, where the profit shown is merely a figure generated by the firm’s system? Where do the payments to traders come from: from real trades or from valuation fees paid by other clients? What happens to a trader’s balance if the firm ceases trading? A reputable firm answers these questions in its public documents or in writing upon request, whilst a firm that sidesteps them provides buyers, through this very evasion, with precisely the information they need to make a prudent decision.

The legal status of this model, too, remains unclear. In August 2023, the CFTC took legal action against Traders Global Group, known as My Forex Funds, accusing it of defrauding clients who paid valuation fees. In May 2025, a federal court in New Jersey dismissed the case outright, after a court-appointed expert found that the CFTC had made false statements in court, and imposed sanctions against the authority. The outcome did not clarify whether prop trading firms fall within the CFTC’s remit, so in practice, traders remain in a grey area where the official register does not provide a complete answer.

Where the regulatory register is silent, scrutiny shifts to the firm’s identity. The company’s legal name can be looked up in the commercial register of the declared jurisdiction, where the date of incorporation, directors and, in some cases, financial statements are listed. The named founders can be verified against independent sources, and a physical address can be confirmed via maps and public registers. Track record matters greatly in a young market, as a firm that has been operating for several years under the same name, at the same address and with the same people has already had the opportunity to either fulfil or break its promises to traders.

For traders in the United Kingdom or those seeking regulated investment services, the ‘Investment Services’ category in the Jasmine Directory outlines the UK regulatory framework and recommends checking each firm against the Financial Conduct Authority’s public register before entering into any partnership. The limitations of such a listing must be made clear. It confirms that a firm exists, that it operates in the stated field and that it can be contacted; however, it does not guarantee payment terms, does not assess the fairness of the rules and does not constitute a financial recommendation. Checking the official register of the relevant authority remains mandatory, and in the case of prop trading firms – which often do not appear in any such register – it is the trader’s responsibility to read the firm’s documents.

Proof of payment and reviews: read with caution

Many firms bolster their credibility with screenshots of payments made to traders and pages full of five-star reviews. Both sources suffer from a selection bias, as the firm chooses which payments to display, and a screenshot does not show how many traders have paid for reviews without ever managing to make a withdrawal. Useful information would be the ratio of the number of reviews sold to the number of payments made, which very few firms publish; its absence, in turn, says something about the business model. Reviews should be read with particular attention to the negative comments, where repeated complaints about the same clause, delayed payments or accounts being closed following a large win indicate a more reliable pattern than the average rating. In the United States, the FTC’s rule on consumer reviews and testimonials, in force since October 2024, prohibits the purchase and publication of fake reviews; however, its enforcement depends on the detection of violations, so readers must still exercise caution.

The payment method offers a final layer of protection, which is often overlooked. In the United States, the Fair Credit Billing Act allows consumers to dispute billing errors on credit cards, including payments for services not provided as agreed, provided the complaint is sent to the issuer within 60 days of receiving the statement. Payment by bank transfer or cryptocurrency generally removes this option. Keeping screenshots of the terms and prices displayed on the day of purchase provides the trader with proof of the terms accepted, should the firm subsequently change them.

A scenario worth considering

A trader has $250 set aside for their first trial account, and a firm offers them a $50,000 account for $89, with a 30 per cent discount code – which seems like the deal of the year. The trader completes the trial within eleven days. Only then do they discover the activation fee, a consistency rule that cancels out the second week of their winning streak, and an initial payment window that begins after a considerable number of trading days.

The same test applied to a rival firm reveals a list price of $135, with no activation fee, a more relaxed consistency limit and a first payment eligible after just a few days. The initial outlay is higher, but the overall risk is lower, and for those trading with their own money, this trade-off is the deciding factor.

The lesson that traders often learn the hard way is that the evaluation fee merely covers the entry cost, without covering the cost of the entire journey.

This is an honest assessment of the market and the reason why a firm that publishes its total cost deserves more trust than one that only publishes its discount code.

The scenario also highlights a useful habit that extends beyond prop trading. The analysis on assessing risk and reward in life and investment decisions recommends noting, for each option, the cost, the potential gain and the consequences of a disappointing outcome. Applied here, the method involves writing three lines for each firm analysed, before any payment is made: the total cost up to the first withdrawal, the realistic profit the trader can achieve within the rules, and the amount lost if the assessment fails twice. A trader who completes these lines before making a payment compares risks, rather than display prices.

Where is the market heading?

Search demand and rule sets are constantly changing, and anyone comparing firms using a guide written last year is reading an outdated map. Instantly funded accounts, consistency limits and maximum loss structures change from one quarter to the next. For the latest figures, presented alongside each firm’s sales pitches, a good starting point is a neutral comparison of the latest developments in futures prop trading (the latest developments in futures prop trading), so that prices are compared with today’s market rather than that of last spring.

The author’s forecast is that consistency rules will become stricter, activation fees less frequent, and the gap between the cheapest and most expensive valuations will continue to widen, making the verification process increasingly useful with each quarter.

The test before the discount code

The four-fee test takes around 20 minutes per firm, and twenty minutes in exchange for a few hundred dollars is a worthwhile trade-off every time. The steps are clear: choose three firms this week, apply the four fees to each, check the NFA database and note them down on paper before clicking anything. The firm that goes through this process is the one that deserves the $250.

How many of the four fees are currently known off the top of your head for the firm from which the purchase was to be made?

Thus, upon closer inspection, choosing a prop trading firm proves to be a problem of fragmented information, in which the displayed price, the fees revealed later and the unclear legal status of the entire business model all combine to work against the hasty buyer. It can be concluded that the most robust protection comes from piecing these fragments together into a single picture: by calculating the total cost, by comparing the rules with one’s own trading style, and by verifying the firm’s identity through independent sources where the regulatory register does not provide an answer.
