Leading people effectively is one of the most challenging aspects of any career. Someone may excel at the technical side of their work but find themselves ill-prepared the moment they are asked to lead a team, provide direction or be accountable for results that depend on others.<\/p>\n

The most obvious is career progression, as organisations promote people they can entrust with responsibility for others. The more subtle benefits are just as valuable. Managers with proper training feel less overwhelmed, as they have a way of organising problems rather than trying to tackle them all at once.<\/p>\n Their teams stand to gain as well. Clear expectations, constructive performance reviews and sensible planning make work more stable for everyone involved. Good management is one of the most powerful influences on people\u2019s decision to stay in a job and give their best at it, and this influence extends far beyond a single department.<\/p>\n The article\u2019s observation that the skills of a good contributor are not those of a good manager was accurately articulated seven decades ago. In 1955, Robert L. Katz published the article \u2018Skills of an Effective Administrator\u2019 in the Harvard Business Review. A manager, he argued, requires three distinct skills. Promotion for technical performance \u2013 which the text describes as an unexplained change to the job description \u2013 is the trap that Katz explicitly identified: organisations promote the skill they can measure \u2013 the technical one \u2013 and then expect the skills they have never measured. And the argument for structured study is Katz\u2019s argument for training: the second and third abilities are learnt, but rarely by chance.<\/p>\n The model has its limitations, which have been discussed ever since. It is descriptive, not based on measurement: Katz wrote from observation, not from data, and subsequent research has found that the proportions vary greatly depending on the industry and the size of the organisation. The model says little about how human ability\u2014the hardest to teach\u2014is actually learnt, and Katz himself revisited it in 1974, acknowledging that the skills are more intertwined than he had initially suggested. It remains, however, the clearest roadmap for someone who has recently been promoted: of the three skills, the promotion tested only one. The accelerated format described in the article fits, in Katz\u2019s terms, precisely because a seven-week course delivered in the workplace practises both human and conceptual skills on real-world problems, rather than on case studies from another industry.<\/p>\n Among the new responsibilities mentioned in the article\u2014budgets, recruitment, planning\u2014there is one that the text mentions only once, in passing: negotiating with a supplier. Existence and category come first: the company exists, has a registered office and stable contact details, and genuinely operates in the stated field. It doesn\u2019t claim to do more than that, and that is precisely why it serves as an honest first filter. References by name come next \u2013 verified by phone, not just read. The contract is read to check the duration, deliverables and termination conditions. Price comes last, because anyone who starts with price is comparing offers they haven\u2019t verified. A few questions should be put in writing before signing the contract. Who will actually be working on the project, by name. What happens to the company\u2019s data upon termination of the contract. Who are the current clients and can they be contacted? A supplier who answers all these questions without getting annoyed has passed the first test; one who sends a brochure has also responded, in their own way.<\/p>\n Recruitment \u2013 the most costly decision for a new manager \u2013 has its own set of<\/a><\/u><\/span> checks. Recruitment agencies are suppliers like any others, and a curated list of recruitment and employment services<\/a><\/u><\/span> shortens the first stage of vetting. The rest is up to the manager: a candidate\u2019s degree must be verified with the institution, not on a scanned copy, and references must be requested by name and followed up with a phone call. Degree mills thrive on hurried managers who don\u2019t make those calls. A manager who vetes suppliers with the same care as they do employees has realised that conceptual ability also includes the tedious part \u2013 the bit that no course can make seem interesting.<\/p>\n The article recommends structured study without explaining how to choose a programme, yet the choice is still a purchasing decision, with years and money at stake. The accreditation register comes first. Institutional accreditation is confirmed by the body that granted it, not by the logo on the programme\u2019s webpage; note the difference between institutional accreditation and business programme accreditation, as one does not imply the other. A category of providers of professional training and development<\/a><\/u><\/span> carries out the first check \u2013 that of the provider\u2019s existence \u2013 before the two that really matter: confirmed accreditation and discussions with graduates. The accelerated format deserves a separate consideration. Seven-week courses require a level of discipline that not everyone possesses, and a reputable programme publishes its completion rate and specifies how much time it requires per week. Any programme that promises only speed has, in itself, answered the question.<\/p>\n The figures back up the effort. The US Bureau of Labour Statistics reported in 2025, for the year 2024, a median weekly earnings of $1,840 for master\u2019s degree holders, compared with $1,543 for those with a bachelor\u2019s degree, and an unemployment rate of 2.2 per cent compared with 2.5 per cent. These figures represent correlations, not evidence of causation. The difference varies by field and depends on who chooses to continue their studies. The gap widens in leadership roles, where a degree is often a prerequisite, and narrows in trades where experience alone counts. Even so, a pay premium of nearly $300 a week explains why the decision is worth making as an investment \u2013 with cost, return and time horizon set out on paper \u2013 rather than as a promise.<\/p>\n A new risk arises precisely at the research stage. More and more candidates are asking a chatbot which programme to choose, and systems that compile answers from programme prospectuses favour verified and consistent sources. The way in which AI overviews select the directories they cite<\/a><\/u><\/span> is well-documented, and the rule for the candidate is simple: the machine\u2019s answer is verified against the accreditation register, not the other way round. A programme invented by a machine, with a plausible name, has already been seen in practice, and the candidate who checked the register was the only one to notice.<\/p>\n For the manager who has come to be responsible for the firm\u2019s public presence, the question about performance at the end of the article has an answer documented in a business owner\u2019s guide on the performance of directors<\/a><\/u><\/span>: verified presence costs little, takes a long time and is read by both clients and the systems that generate responses. And the professional themselves, with their degree, qualifications and experience, is assessed on the basis of the same indicators of expertise, authority and trust, by recruiters and algorithms alike. The way in which CVs build the author\u2019s authority through signals of expertise<\/a><\/u><\/span> has been thoroughly documented, and the conclusion ties in with the article: a degree counts twice \u2013 once in court and once on a public record. A certification that appears nowhere other than on a CV is worth, to a hurried recruiter, no more than an unverified claim.<\/p>\n What no listing says must be stated just as clearly. An editorially verified entry confirms that a school, company or agency exists, that it can be contacted, that it operates in the category shown, and that it can still be found a year from now. It does not certify a qualification, does not guarantee a provider\u2019s quality, and does not replace either accreditation registers or references checked by telephone. Each layer answers a different question, and source verification takes one hour per supplier and five minutes per candidate \u2013 far less than the cost of a poorly drafted contract or a wrong hire.
