Fill out the form, paste a description, upload a logo, move on. That approach got me about what it deserved: nothing. When I started working with law firms a few years later, I saw partners making the same mistake with much higher stakes, because in legal services a single qualified intake can be worth thousands of dollars in fees.

What follows is the framework I now use with firms in New Hampshire and elsewhere. It is not magic. It is a systematic way to think about directory presence so you stop wasting submission fees and start getting calls from people who actually need what you do.

The VISIBLE framework for directory listings

VISIBLE stands for Verify, Index, Signal, Build, Engage. Yes, that is five letters for a six-letter acronym; the framework has six components because “Engage” splits into ongoing and reactive work. I tried to force a clean acronym for two years before deciding I cared more about the model than the marketing of the model.

flowchart LR
  A[Verify] --> B[Index]
  B --> C[Signal]
  C --> D[Build]
  D --> E[Engage Ongoing]
  E --> F[Engage Reactive]

Figure 1. The VISIBLE framework maps to six sequential levers: Verify jurisdictional fit, Index practice areas to NH queries, Signal trust evidence, Build consistent NAP data, and Engage through both ongoing audits and reactive inquiry response.

Origin of the methodology

I built VISIBLE out of frustration. The standard advice you get from marketing agencies sounds like this: claim your listings, fill them out completely, get reviews. That is true and useless, like telling someone the secret to running a marathon is to keep going until you finish. The real work is in the specifics, and for law firms in a small jurisdiction like New Hampshire, the specifics matter more than the volume.

mindmap
  root((VISIBLE))
    Verify
      Bar admission docs
      NH business registration
      Office presence check
    Index
      NH-specific queries
      County and court names
      Plain-English language
    Signal
      Bar standing data
      Rule 7.1 compliant results
      Testimonials with consent
    Build
      Canonical NAP document
      Duplicate listing removal
      General business citations
    Engage Ongoing
      Quarterly audits
      Analytics tracking
    Engage Reactive
      4-hour inquiry response
      Source attribution logging

Figure 2. The VISIBLE framework expanded: each of the six levers, Verify, Index, Signal, Build, and two modes of Engage, breaks into concrete tactics for NH law firms managing directory presence.

I tested earlier versions of this with three firms in Concord and Manchester between 2021 and 2023. The first version had nine components and nobody could remember them. The current six are what survived contact with actual managing partners who have client meetings to run.

Why generic SEO advice fails firms

Most SEO advice is written for ecommerce. It assumes high search volume, broad geography, and a customer who is comparing on price. None of that applies to a family law attorney in Nashua. Your prospective client is in distress, searching at 10pm on their phone, and they are looking for someone who feels trustworthy and local. They are not going to click through ten results comparing features.

The other problem with generic advice: it ignores ethics rules. The New Hampshire Rules of Professional Conduct, particularly Rule 7.1 through 7.3, constrain what you can say about results, comparisons, and testimonials. I have watched firms get good rankings by doing things that would not survive a bar complaint, and then they lose the rankings anyway when the directory cleans up its listings. Short-term wins, long-term mess.

Six levers that move qualified intake

The six VISIBLE levers, in order of how I apply them:

Verify: jurisdictional fit and bar admission documentation

Index: practice area mapping to specific NH queries

Signal: trust evidence within ethical limits

Build: consistent NAP (name, address, phone) data across citations

Engage (ongoing): quarterly audits and field updates

Engage (reactive): inquiry response within four hours

Did you know? Justia attracts approximately 4 million visitors monthly, making it the highest-traffic legal directory, followed by FindLaw with 3.4 million monthly visitors. Source: Source.

Where traditional directory strategies break down

The “set and forget” trap

I have lost count of how many firms I have audited where the managing partner’s bio still says “associate at Smith & Jones” from a job they left in 2018. Directory listings rot. Phone numbers change, attorneys leave, practice areas shift, office addresses move. If you have not touched your listings in 18 months, at least a quarter of them have errors that are actively hurting you.

flowchart LR
    prospect["NH Prospect"]
    gbp["Google Business Profile"]
    firm["Law Firm Website"]
    justia["Justia / FindLaw"]
    nhbar["NH Bar Directory"]

    prospect -->|finds via local pack| gbp
    prospect -->|discovers via search| justia
    gbp -->|drives traffic to| firm
    justia -->|backlinks to| firm
    nhbar -->|reinforces NAP| gbp

Figure 3. The NH law firm directory ecosystem: a prospective client enters through Google local pack or Justia, with NAP consistency across all systems, Google Business Profile, the firm website, and the NH Bar directory, determining ranking and trust.

The harm is not just embarrassment. Inconsistent data between your Google Business Profile, your Justia listing, and your firm website tells Google that nobody is paying attention. Google penalises inconsistency by deprioritising you in local pack results. You can have a beautifully designed website and still lose to a solo practitioner with an ugly site and consistent citations.

Practice area dilution problem

Here is a pattern I see constantly. A firm offers ten practice areas and lists all ten in every directory. The thinking: “we don’t want to miss any opportunity.” The actual effect: you look like a generalist, your conversion rate plummets, and the directory’s internal ranking algorithm cannot figure out what to feature you for.

If a directory allows three primary categories and you choose ten secondary ones, you have just told the algorithm you are unfocused. Pick what you actually want more of. The work you list is the work you will get.

Missing the New Hampshire intent signal

New Hampshire is a small market. About 1.4 million residents, ten counties, one major bar association. National directories like FindLaw treat NH as just another state, but New Hampshire searchers behave differently than searchers in, say, New Jersey. They search by town more than by city (“Wolfeboro divorce lawyer” rather than just “divorce lawyer”). They care about whether you actually have an office north of the notches. They want to know if you appear in Strafford County Superior Court regularly.

Directories that let you specify this detailed information are gold. Directories that flatten everything to state level are mostly noise.

Myth: The more directories you list in, the better your local ranking. Reality: Five well-maintained, jurisdictionally relevant listings outperform thirty stale ones. After about a dozen quality citations, you hit diminishing returns hard, and inconsistent data across many listings actively hurts you.

Verifying jurisdictional fit before submission

Bar admission documentation

Before you submit to any New Hampshire-focused directory, have these ready as PDFs: your NH Bar admission certificate, your good standing letter (request from the NH Bar Association; they usually turn it around in 3-5 business days), and your firm’s NH business registration. Some directories require all three. Others ask for one and then quietly disqualify you if the others do not match.

If you have attorneys at the firm admitted in different jurisdictions, document who is admitted where in your internal master sheet. You will reference this constantly. I keep it as a simple spreadsheet with attorney name, jurisdiction, admission date, bar number, and standing status.

Office presence requirements in NH

Some directories, and certainly Google Business Profile, expect a physical office. A PO Box will not cut it. If you have a Manchester office and you want to also appear in Portsmouth searches, you cannot just claim a virtual address; Google will catch this and suspend the listing. I have seen this happen twice, and the reinstatement process takes weeks.

If you genuinely operate in multiple NH cities, set up separate Google Business Profiles for each office with that office’s specific phone number and at least one attorney who primarily works from that location. The phone numbers especially matter, because tracking inbound calls by location is the only honest way to know which listing is producing.

Handling multi-state practice claims

If your firm has attorneys admitted in NH and Massachusetts (extremely common given the commuter belt around the southern border), be careful about how directories let you represent that. Listing “MA and NH” prominently in a directory aimed at NH searchers waters down your relevance signal. Better: have one set of listings focused on NH practice and a separate set focused on MA, each with the relevant admitted attorney profiled first.

Quick tip: Before submitting to any paid directory, search the directory for two or three competitor firms you respect. If they are not there, ask yourself why. Sometimes the answer is they are missing an opportunity; more often, the answer is the directory is not worth the money.

Indexing your firm for local search

Mapping practice areas to NH-specific queries

Open a private browsing window. Search the things your clients would search: “divorce attorney Concord NH”, “DUI lawyer Manchester”, “estate planning Portsmouth NH”. Write down the autocomplete suggestions. Those suggestions are real searches from real people. They are your raw material.

Now write your directory descriptions using that language. If people search “DWI” rather than “DUI” in New Hampshire (they do, because the state’s statute uses Driving While Intoxicated terminology), use DWI in your listing. If people search “guardian ad litem” rather than “GAL”, spell it out.

County and court-level specificity

I tell every NH firm I work with: name the counties and courts where you regularly practice. “Family law representation in Hillsborough County Superior Court and the 9th Circuit Family Division” is a sentence that does real work. It tells the algorithm and the human reader exactly what you do and where.

This level of specificity used to feel awkward to attorneys who were trained to keep marketing copy bland. Get over it. Bland copy converts at maybe 1%. Specific copy that names courts and procedures converts at 4-6% in my experience with NH family and criminal practices.

Language that matches how clients search

Your client does not search for “matrimonial dissolution proceedings”. They search for “how to file for divorce in NH”. Your directory description should sound closer to the second than the first while still respecting your professional dignity. There is a balance, and the balance is closer to plain English than most lawyers are comfortable with.

Did you know? Among major legal directories, Justia and FindLaw lead with domain credibility scores of 71 and 70 respectively, while Nolo ranks lowest at 57. That 14-point gap can meaningfully affect how much SEO juice flows from a backlink. Source.

Signaling trust through structured evidence

Bar standing and disciplinary history

Directories that pull bar status data directly from state bar APIs are showing your standing whether you want them to or not. If you have a clean record, this is free trust. If you have a public reprimand from 2017, you cannot hide it, and you should not try; you should think about how your overall profile contextualises it (years of practice since, areas of focus that do not relate to the reprimand subject matter).

Case results that survive ethical review

NH Rule 7.1 prohibits misleading communications. You can describe case results, but you need a disclaimer noting that past results do not guarantee future outcomes, and you cannot characterise results in ways that create unjustified expectations. “Recovered $850,000 for client in motor vehicle case” is generally acceptable with the disclaimer. “Best personal injury lawyer in Manchester” is not.

I keep a simple internal rule for clients: if you cannot defend the claim in front of the Professional Conduct Committee, do not put it in a directory. Directory copy is permanent in ways that website copy is not, because you cannot always edit it quickly when something changes.

Client testimonials within NH rules

Testimonials are permitted in New Hampshire with appropriate context and disclaimers. The cleanest approach: use first names and last initial only, get written consent, include the matter type generally (not the specific facts), and add a standard disclaimer about results varying by case.

Avoid testimonials that compare you favourably to other lawyers, that quantify “the best” anything, or that come from current clients in active matters. I once had to coach a firm through pulling a glowing testimonial because the client wrote it while their appeal was still pending; that is a confidentiality and pressure issue waiting to become a complaint.

Myth: You can use the same marketing copy across all directories to save time. Reality: Each directory has different character limits, formatting, and audience. Copy that works on Avvo reads poorly on a chamber of commerce listing, and vice versa. Budget two hours per major directory the first time you write for it.

Building consistent NAP data

Cross-referencing with google business profile

Your Google Business Profile is the centre of gravity for local search. Every other citation should match it exactly. Same firm name (including punctuation), same address format (including whether you write “Street” or “St.”), same phone number with the same formatting.

erDiagram
  LAW_FIRM ||--o{ ATTORNEY : employs
  LAW_FIRM ||--o{ DIRECTORY_LISTING : has
  DIRECTORY_LISTING ||--|{ PRACTICE_AREA : categorizes
  DIRECTORY_LISTING }|--|| DIRECTORY : appears_in
  DIRECTORY_LISTING ||--o{ CITATION : generates
  LAW_FIRM ||--o{ CITATION : accumulates
  ATTORNEY ||--o{ BAR_ADMISSION : holds

Figure 4. Core entities in an NH law firm directory presence: each firm manages multiple listings across directories, each listing maps to practice areas, and the aggregate citations shape local search authority.

I keep a one-page “canonical NAP” document for every firm I work with. Anyone updating a listing must match the document. This sounds bureaucratic for a small firm and it absolutely is, but I have watched firms gain ranking positions just by spending a weekend reconciling 15 listings to a single source of truth.

Avoiding the duplicate listing penalty

Duplicate listings happen when someone (often a marketing vendor, sometimes the directory’s own data partners) creates a second listing for your firm. Google flags duplicates and may suppress both. You need to claim and either merge or delete duplicates as you find them.

Search your firm name in Google Maps quarterly. Search the phone number too, in quotes. If two listings come up, fix it now, not later. The longer duplicates exist, the more inbound links and reviews accumulate on the wrong one.

Citation patterns that strengthen rankings

Beyond the legal-specific directories, general business directories still carry weight for local SEO. Chamber of commerce listings, the Better Business Bureau, the NH business registry, and broader directories. For the broader category, Business Directory is one of the general business directories I have used for clients who want a curated listing alongside their legal-specific ones; it indexes well and the editorial process keeps spam down, which matters when Google evaluates the quality of sites linking to you.

Foursquare also still matters for location data because many apps and services pull from Foursquare’s business listings as their underlying data source.

Directory

Best for

Cost range (annual)

Maintenance effort

Justia

SEO authority, broad reach

Free profile; paid upgrade varies

Low after setup

FindLaw

Lead generation, broad reach

$1,500-$10,000+

Medium; vendor manages

Avvo

Reviews, Q&A visibility

Free; paid upgrades $100-$500/mo

High if engaging Q&A

Martindale-Hubbell

Peer credibility, AV ratings

Free basic; premium $1,000+

Low

Super Lawyers

Prestige listings (selective)

By invitation; paid features extra

Low

NH Bar Association directory

Local trust signal

Included in bar dues

Very low

Google Business Profile

Local pack rankings

Free

Medium; ongoing reviews

Jasmine Directory

General business citation

One-time submission fee

Very low

Did you know? Business directory listings provide backlinks to your website and social media accounts, directly boosting SEO and increasing the likelihood of appearing higher in search results. Source.

Engaging through ongoing directory activity

Quarterly profile audits

Put it on the calendar. First Monday of each quarter, two hours, go through every listing. Check that phone numbers still ring the right desk, that attorneys still work at the firm, that practice areas still match what you want to be hired for, that the photo of your office is not from before the renovation.

Most firms cannot maintain weekly attention to this, and they do not need to. Quarterly is enough if you do it seriously.

Responding to inquiries within 4 hours

This is where most firms lose the game. A prospective client sends an inquiry through your Justia profile at 2pm Tuesday. You respond Thursday morning. By Thursday they have already retained someone else, because legal problems do not pause for your billable hours.

Modern Business Center Plaza

The data on this is consistent across industries: response time correlates with conversion more strongly than almost any other variable. Set up email forwarding so directory inquiries land in your intake person’s inbox immediately. If you do not have an intake person, set up a phone notification on the receiving inbox.

Tracking which fields drive contact

If a directory offers analytics, use them. Which sections of your profile do visitors actually view? Which lead to clicks on your phone number? If 80% of contacts come from people who viewed your “Case Results” section, expand that section. If nobody reads your “About the Firm” essay, shorten it.

What if… you have only $2,000 a year for directory listings? Spend it like this: claim and fully build out every free listing first (Google Business Profile, Justia free, Avvo free, NH Bar Association, two or three general business directories with one-time fees). Then put the remaining budget into one paid directory where your competitors are visible and you are not. Do not spread thin across multiple paid services until you have proof one is producing.

Full walkthrough: a Manchester family law firm

Let me walk through how this looks in practice. Six years in operation. Website existed but was rarely updated. Existing directory listings: Google Business Profile (claimed but sparse), an outdated Avvo profile for the senior partner, a FindLaw listing paid for at $4,200 a year that the managing partner could not actually evaluate, and a NH Bar Association directory listing with the firm’s old address.

Intake baseline before applying the framework: 8 new client consultations per month, of which 5 became retained matters. Average matter value approximately $4,800. Roughly 30% of intakes attributed to directory or search sources; the rest from referrals.

Applying each VISIBLE lever in sequence

Verify (week 1): Gathered bar admission documentation for both attorneys. Confirmed the junior associate was admitted in MA as well, which had not been documented anywhere. Updated the firm’s NH business registration address, which had not been changed since the office move 14 months earlier.

Index (weeks 2-3): Rewrote practice area descriptions to match actual NH searcher language. Replaced “matrimonial law” with “divorce and family law”. Added county-specific phrases: “representing clients in Hillsborough County and Rockingham County family courts”. Identified that the firm did substantial post-divorce modification work, which had not been called out separately anywhere; created a dedicated section for it.

Signal (week 4): Audited all case result claims for Rule 7.1 compliance. Removed two that were on the edge. Added the required disclaimer language to all results. Collected three new client testimonials with proper consent and disclaimers. Confirmed clean bar standing was reflected in all directory profiles.

Build (weeks 5-6): Created the canonical NAP document. Identified eleven citations with inconsistent data. Reconciled all to match Google Business Profile exactly. Found and merged one duplicate Google listing that had been created when an old Yelp listing was syndicated.

Engage ongoing (week 7 forward): Set up the quarterly audit calendar. Established response-time targets and set up email forwarding from each directory’s inquiry form to the firm’s intake email with a distinct tag per directory source.

Engage reactive (week 7 forward): Trained the receptionist on which directory each inquiry came from and how to greet accordingly. Started tracking source attribution on every consultation booking.

Six-month results and what the framework missed

After six months: 14 new consultations per month (up from 8), of which 9 became retained matters (up from 5). Directory and search attribution rose to about 48% of intakes. The firm cancelled the $4,200 FindLaw subscription after determining that in five months it had produced two consultations, neither of which retained. They redirected that money to a Super Lawyers listing for the senior partner, which had become eligible during the period.

Here is what the framework missed. I underestimated how much the Avvo Q&A function would matter. The senior partner answered roughly two NH-specific divorce questions per week on Avvo for three months and that single activity drove a noticeable share of new contacts. The framework treats engagement as audit-and-response, but for some platforms, contributing public content is a separate lever I now add to the engagement component.

I also did not anticipate how much the firm would benefit from a NH-specific blog post on temporary orders that ranked well organically because of the directory citation pattern feeding domain signals to the website. That was a bonus, but a real one.

Did you know? Directory listings remain one of the most underutilised yet effective ways to boost online presence in 2025, with many businesses missing free traffic due to improper listing practices. Source.

Myth: Once you rank well in directories, you can stop working on them. Reality: Rankings decay. Competitors update their listings, directories change their algorithms, and your information goes stale. The firms that hold position are the ones doing quarterly maintenance, not the ones who set up perfectly once.

Edge cases and honest limitations

VISIBLE works best for firms with one to five attorneys in defined practice areas. For larger firms with twenty attorneys across ten practice groups, the indexing problem becomes genuinely hard, and you need a more sophisticated approach with attorney-specific landing pages and individual directory profiles linked back to firm-level entities. The framework still applies, but execution gets messier.

It also works less well for transactional practices (estate planning, business formation) than for litigation-driven practices. Transactional clients tend to come through referrals more than search, so directory ROI is harder to demonstrate. I still recommend doing the work because the trust signal matters when a referred prospect Googles you, but do not expect dramatic intake increases.

One honest limitation: I do not have rigorous data showing which specific NH-focused citations contribute most to local pack rankings. Google does not publish their algorithm and the proxies we use (citation count, NAP consistency, review velocity) are inferences from observation. If anyone tells you they know exactly which lever moves what percentage of ranking, treat that claim with appropriate scepticism.

Did you know? Proper directory listings increase visibility across multiple search engines including Google, Bing, Yahoo, and others, not just one platform. This matters more than people realise because Bing still drives roughly 6-8% of US desktop search traffic. Source.

What to do this week

Pick three things.
