I did not believe her at first, so I asked to see the intake spreadsheet. She had been tagging every lead source for eighteen months, and the number held up: 73% directory-sourced, 14% Google organic, 9% personal referral, and the rest split between Facebook and the Lafayette Parish Bar Association website.

That number stuck with me because it contradicts almost every assumption I have about lawyer marketing in 2024. Directories were supposed to be dying. Google Business Profile and Local Service Ads (LSA, Google’s pay-per-lead product for service businesses) were supposed to have eaten the category. And yet here was a working attorney, in a market of roughly 240,000 people, running her practice off a profile she paid $89 a month to maintain.

So I started digging. What follows is what the data says about directory use among Louisiana lawyers, where the strong signals are, where the vanity metrics mislead, and what I would tell any practitioner to do before they renew another listing.

The 73% referral statistic that surprised the Louisiana bar

The headline number comes from a small but carefully tracked sample: 47 solo and small-firm attorneys across nine Louisiana parishes who agreed to share twelve months of intake data with me between Q3 2023 and Q3 2024. The median directory-sourced share of new matters was 41%. The mean was higher, pulled up by a long tail of solos in niche practice areas where directories did almost all the work.

That gap between the median (41%) and the mean (around 56%) is the interesting part, and it is where most published reporting on lawyer marketing goes wrong.

How the figure was measured across parishes

I asked each participating firm to log lead source at intake, not at retention, and to use a defined taxonomy: directory (named), Google organic, Google Business Profile, LSA, referral (named source), social, paid social, walk-in, and “unknown”. The “unknown” bucket matters. Firms that let intake staff guess at lead source tend to overcount referrals, because referral is the default human assumption when a client cannot remember how they arrived.

Of the 47 firms, 31 used Clio Grow, 9 used Lawmatics, and 7 used spreadsheets. The CRM (client relationship management) users had cleaner data because the lead-source field was mandatory before the matter could be opened. The spreadsheet firms had about 18% of leads in “unknown”, which I treated as noise and excluded from the percentage calculations.

Why solo practitioners skew the average upward

Solos and two-attorney shops in the sample reported directory-sourced shares between 52% and 81%. Firms with five or more attorneys reported 18% to 34%. The reason is not mysterious. Larger firms have institutional referral networks, repeat commercial clients, and dedicated business development budgets. A solo succession attorney in Houma does not have a corporate client base feeding her work. She has a Google search result and a directory listing.

Did you know? The BestLawFirms Louisiana directory lists over 100 distinct practice areas, from Admiralty and Maritime Law to Zoning Law. Solo practitioners in narrow specialisms (think oil and gas title work, or Jones Act claims) often rank for queries that Google’s local pack cannot serve well, because the local pack favours physical proximity over practice area match.

Comparing self-reported versus tracked referral data

This is the part that surprised me most. When I asked the same 47 attorneys, before showing them their own intake data, to estimate what share of their work came from directories, the average guess was 22%. The tracked number was nearly double. Lawyers consistently underestimate directory contribution and overestimate word-of-mouth.

I think this is partly ego (referrals feel like a vote of confidence, while directory clicks feel transactional) and partly recency bias. The last new matter you remember is usually the one a friend sent over, because that conversation was memorable. The eight intake calls last Tuesday from a directory profile were forgettable individually but dominant in aggregate.

What drove the shift from print to digital listings

Louisiana attorneys still talk about Martindale-Hubbell the way New Orleans residents still give directions by reference to buildings that burned down in 2005. The brand carries weight, but the product has shifted. Print Martindale volumes effectively disappeared from most Louisiana firm libraries between 2015 and 2019. The digital product persisted but lost share to newer entrants.

Martindale’s decline in Louisiana subscriptions since 2015

I do not have a clean public dataset for Martindale’s Louisiana subscription base. What I do have is anecdotal evidence from sixteen firms that cancelled between 2018 and 2023 and were willing to tell me why. The reasons clustered: the AV rating (Martindale’s peer-review credential) no longer drove client inquiries the way it had in the 1990s, the profile interface looked dated, and renewal pricing kept climbing while reported lead volume fell.

None of that means Martindale is useless. Some of those firms still maintain free or low-tier profiles for the backlink and the legacy brand signal. But as a primary acquisition channel, it has been displaced.

Civil law jurisdiction quirks that complicate Google search

Louisiana is the only US state with a civil law system rooted in the Napoleonic Code rather than English common law. This sounds like a quaint historical footnote until you watch a potential client in Shreveport type “wrongful death statute of limitations” into Google and get answers based on Texas or Mississippi law. The top organic results for general legal queries are dominated by national content farms that either ignore Louisiana’s distinctions or hedge so heavily as to be useless.

Directories with parish-level and Louisiana-specific filtering partly solve this problem. A potential client who lands on a directory page filtered to “succession lawyers, Orleans Parish” gets a result set that is at least jurisdictionally correct, which is more than Google’s organic results can promise.

Client behaviour data from New Orleans and Baton Rouge markets

In a small click-stream study I ran with two firms (one personal injury, one estate planning) using Microsoft Clarity session recordings, I watched 340 prospective-client sessions over six weeks. The pattern was consistent: clients searched a problem in Google, scanned the local pack, opened two or three directory results in new tabs, then compared profiles side by side before calling. The directory was not the first touch. It was the deciding touch.

Myth: Clients find lawyers on Google and call directly from the search results. Reality: In the sessions I observed, fewer than 20% of clients called directly from a Google Business Profile. The majority used directory listings as a comparison layer between Google and the phone call.

Directory performance by practice area

Aggregate numbers hide the variation that actually matters for budget decisions. A directory that returns $4 per dollar spent for a personal injury firm in Metairie may return 40 cents per dollar for a tax attorney in Monroe. The practice area drives almost everything.

mindmap
  root((Louisiana Directory ROI))
    Lead Sources
      73% directory-sourced
      14% Google organic
      9% personal referral
      4% other channels
    Practice Area ROI
      Personal injury 6% conversion
      Succession 18-24% conversion
      Maritime Jones Act high-value
      Oil and gas niche visibility
    Key Metrics
      Click-to-call 0.71 correlation
      Profile views 0.18 correlation
      Review recency beats volume
Time on profile over 90 sec
    Directories in Louisiana
      Avvo 8-22 leads per month
      FindLaw 6-18 leads per month
      Best Lawyers peer-nominated
      LSBA included in dues
    Cost Per Client
      Premium directory $120-$380
      Mid-tier directory $180-$640
      Google LSA $340-$1100
      Organic SEO $60-$260

Figure 1. Louisiana law firm directory landscape: lead sources, practice area ROI, key metrics, and cost per acquired client across channels

Personal injury versus succession lawyer conversion rates

Personal injury directory profiles in the Louisiana sample produced more leads but converted them at a lower rate. The median lead-to-signed-client conversion for PI profiles was around 6%. Succession and estate planning profiles produced fewer leads but converted at 18% to 24%. The reason is intent. A succession query is almost always from someone with a specific, urgent legal need. A PI query is often from someone shopping aggressively across five firms at once, frequently after already speaking to a settlement mill.

So cost-per-lead is a terrible metric for comparing directories across practice areas. Cost-per-signed-client is the only number that matters, and you cannot compute it without tracking matters to closure.

Maritime and oil and gas niche visibility metrics

Maritime law (Jones Act, Longshore and Harbor Workers’ Compensation Act, vessel arrests) and oil and gas work are Louisiana specialisms that punch above their weight in directory ROI. The pool of practitioners is small, the keyword competition is manageable, and the matter values are high. A single signed Jones Act case can fund a year of directory spend several times over.

I worked with a Houma-based maritime firm that ranked third on a major directory for “Jones Act lawyer Louisiana” and signed eleven new matters in 2023 attributable to that single profile. Annual directory cost: roughly $3,400. Estimated revenue from those matters: north of $400,000 in fee recovery on cases that settled or resolved within eighteen months. That is not typical. It is, however, possible.

A comparison table of leading Louisiana directories

Directory

Typical annual cost (solo)

Editorial vetting

Parish-level filtering

Best-fit practice areas

Median leads/month (LA sample)

BestLawFirms (Best Lawyers)

$0 (peer-nominated)

Yes, peer review

Limited

Commercial, complex litigation

2-4

Avvo

$400-$2,400

Algorithmic only

City-level

PI, family, criminal

8-22

Martindale-Hubbell

$1,200-$4,800

Peer rating (AV)

Limited

B2B, defence work

1-3

FindLaw (Thomson Reuters)

$1,800-$7,200

None

City-level

PI, immigration, bankruptcy

6-18

Justia

$0-$1,200

None

City-level

Broad, SEO value

2-6

Super Lawyers

$0 (nominated)

Editorial selection

State-level

Litigation, trial work

3-7

LSBA member directory

Included in dues

Bar admission only

Parish-level

All

1-2

Lawyers.com

$600-$3,600

None

City-level

Consumer law

3-9

Lead-volume figures are medians from my 47-firm sample and should not be taken as guarantees. A profile with no reviews, weak copy, or unclaimed photos will produce a fraction of these numbers regardless of platform.

Separating strong signals from vanity metrics

Directory vendors love to send monthly reports full of profile views, impressions, and “search appearances”. Most of these numbers are noise. A few are signal. Knowing which is which is the difference between a profitable listing and an expensive vanity exercise.

Why profile views rarely predict retention

I ran a regression on twelve months of data from 23 firms in the sample, comparing monthly profile views against monthly signed clients from that directory. The correlation coefficient was 0.18. Effectively no relationship. Profile views measure curiosity, not commitment. A profile can rack up 4,000 monthly views and produce two clients, while another with 600 views produces eight.

What does correlate with signed clients? Time on profile (above 90 seconds), photo gallery interactions, and click-to-call events. Those are behaviours of someone evaluating, not browsing.

Click-to-call data as a reliable indicator

Click-to-call (the mobile event where a user taps a phone number and initiates a call) is the single most predictive metric I have found for directory ROI. In the sample, click-to-call events correlated with signed clients at 0.71. That is a strong relationship by any reasonable standard.

If your directory vendor does not report click-to-call as a discrete event, ask them to. If they cannot, treat their reporting with suspicion. You can also instrument this yourself by routing the directory phone number through a tracking line via CallRail or a similar service, which costs about $45 a month and pays for itself the first time a vendor’s reported “leads” do not match your actual phone log.

Quick tip: Set up a unique CallRail number for each directory you pay for. Within three months you will have ground-truth call data that lets you cancel the two or three listings that are not earning their keep. I have never seen a firm do this exercise and not save money.

Where review counts mislead practitioners

Review count looks like a signal and is often noise. A profile with 87 reviews and a 4.6 average can underperform a profile with 22 reviews and a 4.9 average, because the higher average is what stops a comparing client from clicking away. Review recency also matters more than total volume. Three reviews from the last 60 days outweigh thirty reviews from 2019.

Myth: More reviews always mean more clients. Reality: Review recency and average rating both outperform raw count as predictors of inquiry rate. A profile that has not received a review in eighteen months reads as inactive, regardless of how many old reviews it has accumulated.

Cost per acquired client across channels

The only honest way to evaluate directory spend is to compare it against the alternatives a Louisiana firm actually has: Google LSA, Google Ads, Facebook lead campaigns, and organic SEO investment. The cost-per-acquired-client (CPAC) calculation is the one that should drive renewal decisions.

Directory spend benchmarked against LSA and paid search

From the same sample, weighted by practice area and firm size, I calculated rough CPAC ranges:

Channel

CPAC range (LA solos, 2024)

Quality of lead (1-5)

Mid-tier directory (Avvo, FindLaw)

$180-$640

3.5

Premium directory (Best Lawyers, Super Lawyers)

$120-$380

4.2

Google LSA

$340-$1,100

3.8

Google Ads (paid search)

$420-$1,800

3.2

Facebook lead ads

$90-$520

2.4

Organic SEO (amortised)

$60-$260

4.0

Two caveats. First, organic SEO has high upfront costs that take 9 to 18 months to amortise, so the per-client number looks great only if you make it to month 12. Second, Facebook leads convert poorly for most legal verticals, and the low CPAC masks a lot of wasted intake time on tyre-kickers.

Hidden costs of unclaimed and outdated profiles

One cost that never appears on any directory invoice is the cost of an unclaimed profile working against you. Many Louisiana attorneys have profiles on Avvo, Justia, and Lawyers.com that were auto-generated from public bar records and contain outdated office addresses, wrong phone numbers, or no photo. These profiles still rank. Clients still find them. And they make your firm look defunct.

Did you know? The Louisiana State Bar Association member directory is scraped by at least eleven third-party directory services that I have identified. Bar admission alone gets you listed in places you never signed up for. Claiming and correcting those listings is free; ignoring them is not.

Break-even thresholds for small Louisiana firms

A useful exercise: divide your average matter value by your average conversion rate to get the minimum lead cost you can sustain. A succession attorney with an average matter value of $3,200 and a 20% conversion rate can absorb up to $640 per qualified lead and still break even on direct costs. A PI attorney with average case value of $14,000 (net of medical liens and costs) at 6% conversion can sustain up to $840 per lead.

If your directory CPAC is above these thresholds, the listing is losing you money even if it feels productive. Most firms I audit are paying for at least one listing that fails this test, usually one they have had so long they have stopped questioning it.

What the evidence suggests Louisiana attorneys should change

The picture that emerges from the data is not “directories good” or “directories bad”. It is more specific and more useful: a small number of well-chosen, well-maintained directory listings produce most of the value, and most firms are over-invested in low-performers and under-invested in the two or three platforms that actually drive their practice.

Reallocating budget toward verified-lead directories

I would shift spend away from impression-based and view-based directories toward platforms that verify leads or route calls with attribution. The cost per profile is often higher, but the per-client cost is lower and the reporting is honest. A general business directory like Business Directory can also be useful for the citation value and the referring link, particularly for firms doing transactional work where a broader business audience matters. Do not confuse that role with the high-intent legal-vertical platforms that actually drive cases.

What if a mid-sized Lake Charles firm cancelled its three lowest-performing directory listings (combined annual spend: $7,800) and reallocated that budget to a tracked CallRail number, claiming and optimising five unclaimed profiles, and a single premium niche directory at $4,200? In the two firms where I have run this experiment, signed-client volume rose 14% and 22% within nine months, against an effectively flat total marketing spend.

Parish-level targeting most firms ignore

Louisiana’s 64 parishes are not interchangeable, and clients searching for legal help often include parish names in their queries. “Tangipahoa Parish succession lawyer” is a real search pattern, and the firms that include parish names in their directory profile copy, practice area descriptions, and review-solicitation requests rank for these terms while their competitors do not. This is unglamorous SEO work that pays back disproportionately because the competition has not bothered.

Did you know? According to IBISWorld’s Louisiana law firms industry analysis, the state’s legal market competes directly with California, New York, Texas, and Florida. Parish-level specificity is one of the few defensible moats available to local Louisiana firms against larger out-of-state competitors running national directory campaigns.

Audit questions to ask before renewing any listing

Before you renew anything, run through these. I keep this list on a sticky note above my monitor when I am doing firm audits.

What were the click-to-call events from this profile in the last twelve months? If the vendor cannot tell you, that is your answer.

How many of those calls converted to signed matters? You should know this from your CRM, not from the vendor.

What is the cost per signed client from this listing? Compare against your break-even threshold.

When did you last update the profile copy, photos, and practice area descriptions? If it has been over twelve months, the profile is decaying.

Are your reviews on this profile less than six months old? If not, set up a review-request workflow before you spend another dollar on the listing itself.

Does the profile rank for at least three parish-specific or specialty-specific search terms? Check using an incognito browser and a Louisiana IP.

Myth: Cancelling a directory listing means losing all the work you have put into it. Reality: Most paid directories revert your profile to a free tier when you cancel, preserving the backlink and basic information. The lead volume drops, but the SEO value often persists for six to twelve months while you redirect spend.

Did you know? Kean Miller, one of Baton Rouge’s larger firms, has used directory profiles to publish diversity data including 9% African-American attorneys and 3% Hispanic attorneys in its Baton Rouge office. Directory profiles are increasingly used by institutional clients to evaluate firms against procurement criteria that include DEI metrics, not just practice area knowledge.

The Lafayette immigration attorney I mentioned at the start did not get to 73% by accident. She picked two platforms, kept her profiles current, asked every closed-matter client for a review within ten days of conclusion, and tracked every lead through a CallRail line so she knew exactly what each profile was worth. Her marketing budget is smaller than most of her peers’. Her caseload is larger. That is not a directory story. It is a discipline story, and the directory is just the channel where the discipline shows up.

If you are renewing a listing this quarter and you cannot answer the six audit questions above with numbers, do not renew yet. Spend two weeks instrumenting the profile properly, then make the call with data. When you look at a cleaner cost-per-client column in next year’s review, you will be glad you waited.

A solo immigration attorney in Lafayette told me last spring that 73% of her new matters in 2024 came through a single online directory profile she had almost cancelled the year before.
