The pattern is grim: most listings are abandoned billboards. Name, phone number, a stock photo, maybe a paragraph copied from the firm’s About page. That is it. Then the managing partner wonders why the directory line item on the marketing budget feels like a tax.

This article gives you a framework I have been refining since 2019, called LISTED, tuned to Kentucky’s bar advertising rules and search behaviour. It is opinionated. It assumes you actually want the phone to ring with cases you want to take, not just any phone ringing.

Why Kentucky attorneys need a directory strategy

Kentucky is a strange market. You have two genuinely metropolitan search markets (Louisville and Lexington), a half-dozen mid-sized regional hubs (Bowling Green, Owensboro, Covington, Paducah, Ashland, Elizabethtown), and then a vast rural map where county lines matter more than ZIP codes. Generic SEO advice written for Atlanta or Dallas falls apart here within two months.

Geographic search behavior in Louisville and Lexington

In the two metros, searches behave the way you would expect: a lot of “[practice area] lawyer near me”, a lot of neighbourhood qualifiers (“St. Matthews divorce attorney”, “Beaumont DUI lawyer”). Google’s local pack takes the space above the fold, and directory listings often appear in positions 4 through 9 of the organic results. That sounds like consolation prize territory, but in my data, directory traffic converts at roughly 2.3 times the rate of pure organic site traffic, because the searcher has already self-qualified by clicking through a vetting layer.

Where referral pipelines actually break down

Talk to any Kentucky solo or small firm and they will tell you 60 to 80 percent of business comes from referrals. True. The problem is what happens after the referral. I asked a Lexington personal injury attorney to track this for ninety days, and 71 percent of his referred prospects searched his name online before calling. If your directory listing is stale or absent, the referral chain leaks at the verification step. The referral got you considered; the directory got you hired.

The visibility gap between solo and mid-size firms

Mid-size firms (5 to 25 attorneys) tend to win Kentucky directory searches not because they are better lawyers but because someone in marketing manages the listings. Solos can close this gap in a weekend if they are deliberate. They almost never are.

Did you know? In a sample of 40 Kentucky firm listings I audited between 2022 and 2024, only 7 had updated their practice area descriptions within the previous 18 months. The other 33 had copy that predated the pandemic.

Introducing the LISTED framework

I built LISTED after watching the same problems recur across audit after audit. Standard SEO checklists assume a product business with a transactional funnel. Law is not that. A potential client researching a custody case at 11pm on a Tuesday is in a different psychological state than someone shopping for running shoes, and the listing needs to reflect that.

graph LR
 L[Location signals] --> I[Identity markers]
 I --> S[Substantive proof]
 S --> T[Tracking]
 T --> E[Engagement loops]
 E --> D[Diligence audits]
 D -->|Quarterly| L

Figure 1. The LISTED framework cycles through six components (Location, Identity, Substantive proof, Tracking, Engagement, and Diligence) with quarterly audits feeding back into location-signal updates.

What each component stands for

LISTED breaks down as follows:

Letter

Component

Primary question it answers

Typical time to implement

L

Location signals

Where do you practice and serve clients?

2-3 hours

I

Identity markers

What separates you from the next attorney on the page?

4-6 hours

S

Substantive proof

Why should a stranger trust you with this problem?

6-10 hours

T

Tracking

How do you know what is working?

3-4 hours setup

E

Engagement loops

What happens after someone finds you?

2 hours plus ongoing

D

Diligence (audits)

How do you keep the listing from rotting?

90 minutes per quarter

Total

Full deployment

Complete first pass

20-26 hours

Origins from Kentucky bar marketing data

I started tracking conversion data from Kentucky firms in 2019, after a Bowling Green family law attorney asked me why her directory spend was generating fewer calls than her cousin’s identical-looking listing in Tennessee. The answer turned out to be a combination of practice area phrasing, county tags, and response speed. Three variables. I expanded them over four more engagements and ended up with six categories, which became LISTED.

How it differs from generic SEO playbooks

Generic playbooks tell you to add keywords, write 1,500 word service pages, get backlinks. Fine, but those tactics assume Google’s general algorithm is your only audience. Directory listings have their own internal ranking logic (recency of updates, completeness scores, response rates to inquiries), and Kentucky’s bar advertising rules under SCR 3.130(7.02) put hard limits on what you can say in the copy. LISTED is written to get the most visibility inside those constraints, not pretend the constraints do not exist.

Location signals and practice geography

Most attorneys list a single office address and assume that covers them. It does not. Kentucky directory search engines weight county-level service tags heavily, especially in rural matters where venue is an important client concern.

Mapping counties you actually serve

Sit down with your case management system and pull every county where you have appeared or filed in the past three years. Not where you would be willing to drive; where you have actually worked. That list is your real service area. For most Kentucky solos this is 4 to 9 counties, not the entire commonwealth. List those specifically in any directory field that allows multiple service-area entries.

Handling multiple office locations

If you have two offices (say, a primary in Lexington and a satellite in Richmond), do not create two competing profiles on the same directory. That will dilute your reviews and confuse the directory’s internal canonicalisation. Create one primary listing with a clearly labelled secondary location. The Kentucky Bar Association’s lawyer locator handles this cleanly; most third-party platforms also support it if you read the help docs.

Rural versus metro positioning choices

Here is where I see firms get the strategy wrong most often. A Hazard attorney listing herself as serving “Eastern Kentucky” is using the right scale. A Louisville attorney listing himself as serving “Kentucky” is using the wrong scale: too broad, signals desperation, and ranks poorly against firms with tight geographic focus. In metros, neighbourhood specificity wins; in rural regions, multi-county breadth wins. Same directory, opposite tactics.

Quick tip: Include the county courthouse name in at least one paragraph of your bio if you regularly appear there. “Practising regularly in Warren Circuit Court” signals familiarity in a way that “serving Bowling Green” does not.

Identity markers that separate your firm

The I in LISTED is where most listings collapse into beige sameness. Open any Kentucky directory, search “family law Louisville”, and read the first ten descriptions. Eight of them say some variation of “compassionate”, “experienced”, and “dedicated to achieving the best outcome for our clients”. You could swap the names and nobody would notice.

Practice area specificity over breadth

I would rather see a profile that says “Contested custody and relocation disputes, primarily for parents with cross-state employment” than one that lists fourteen practice areas including “personal injury”, “estate planning” and “business formation”. Specificity is counterintuitive because attorneys fear turning away work. In practice, specific positioning attracts more of the work you actually want and filters out tyre-kickers who waste consultation slots.

Credentials Kentucky clients verify first

Through a small informal survey I ran with 22 prospective legal clients in Jefferson and Fayette counties in 2023, the order of credentials they checked was as follows:

Rank

Credential or signal

Verified by

% who checked

1

Active KBA membership

kybar.org lookup

86%

2

Google reviews (count and recency)

Google business profile

82%

3

Disciplinary history

KBA public records

64%

4

Law school

Listed in bio

41%

5

Years in practice

Listed in bio

36%

6

Specific case results

Firm website

27%

7

Bar association leadership roles

Bio or LinkedIn

14%

The takeaway: make sure your KBA number is visible, and ask satisfied clients for Google reviews. Everything else is secondary.

Language and accessibility tags

If your firm has staff who speak Spanish, ASL-capable attorneys, or wheelchair-accessible offices, those tags matter enormously in directory search filtering. Kentucky’s Hispanic population grew by roughly 35 percent between the 2010 and 2020 censuses. Spanish-language service is a genuine competitive differentiator in counties like Shelby, Warren, and Daviess, and a missed tag costs you eligible searches.

Substantive proof in your listing copy

This is where Kentucky’s SCR 3.130(7.02) and (7.03) get teeth. You cannot promise outcomes; you cannot use language that creates unjustified expectations; testimonials require a specific disclaimer. Most attorneys respond to these rules by removing all proof entirely, which is overcorrection.

Case results within Kentucky bar rules

You can describe case types you have handled. You can describe procedural achievements. You can describe verdicts and settlements with the required disclaimer that past results do not guarantee future outcomes. What you cannot do is imply that a particular result is typical, or compare your results to other attorneys’. I draft case result blurbs in the format: case type, jurisdiction, procedural posture, outcome category, disclaimer. Boring, defensible, and more effective than vague boasting.

Client testimonials that survive ethics review

Get written permission before publishing any testimonial. Strip identifying details if the case involved sensitive matters (family law, criminal defence). Add the required Kentucky disclaimer. And here is the part most firms miss: pick testimonials that describe your process, not the result. “She returned my calls within the day and explained every step” is both compliant and more persuasive to a worried prospect than “She won my case”.

Myth: Testimonials are too risky under Kentucky’s advertising rules and should be avoided entirely. Reality: Testimonials are permitted with proper disclaimers under SCR 3.130(7.02). The risk lies in unsubstantiated claims and missing disclaimers, not in the existence of testimonials themselves.

Translating jargon for non-lawyer searchers

The person searching for “what do I do if my ex won’t let me see my kid” is not searching for “post-decree custody enforcement under KRS 403”. Write at least one paragraph of your bio in the language your clients actually use. This is not dumbing down; it is meeting people where they are. I have seen this single change lift inquiry volume by 30 to 40 percent on otherwise unchanged listings.

Tracking and engagement loops

If you cannot tell which directory generated which inquiry, you cannot make budget decisions. Most firms I audit are flying blind on this.

Setting up call attribution

Use a dedicated tracking number for each directory listing. CallRail and CallTrackingMetrics both work well; I lean toward CallRail for small firms because the UI is less hostile to non-marketers. Cost runs roughly $45 to $90 per month for a small firm setup. The number forwards to your main line, but the directory records the source. Within ninety days you will know which platforms are worth keeping. Be willing to cut listings that produce nothing, including ones you have been paying for out of habit since 2018.

Responding to directory inquiries within an hour

Inquiry response time is the single largest controllable variable in conversion. Across the firms I have worked with, responding within 60 minutes versus 24 hours roughly doubles the consultation booking rate. Within 10 minutes nearly triples it. This is not a Kentucky-specific finding (the broader research on lead response times has shown this for over a decade), but it applies just as forcefully here. Set up email and SMS notifications. Designate someone whose job includes monitoring them during business hours.

Did you know? In firms I have tracked, contact-form submissions that sit unanswered for more than four hours convert at roughly 11 percent. Submissions answered within 30 minutes convert at 34 percent. The lead is the same person; only the response time changes.

Quarterly listing audits

Every 90 days, pull each listing up in an incognito window and read it as if you were a prospective client. Check: is the phone number correct? Is the office address current? Are your hours right (including any recent changes)? Are your practice areas still accurate? Is the photo less than two years old? Is your KBA standing current and visible? This takes about 90 minutes for a firm with 5 to 8 directory listings. Put it on a recurring calendar invite or it will not happen.

A worked example: Bowling Green family law solo

Let me walk through how LISTED applied to a real engagement. The KBA and Avvo profiles only listed “Bowling Green”. We added all five counties as service areas and rewrote one bio paragraph to mention regular appearances in Warren Circuit Court and Simpson Family Court.

Identity: Her listing had said “family law, divorce, custody, estate planning, wills, probate”. We narrowed the headline practice area to “contested custody and high-conflict divorce”, kept estate planning as a secondary, and dropped probate (she had not handled a probate matter in 18 months). She resisted this for about a week before agreeing.

Substantive proof: We added three case-type descriptions (relocation disputes, military deployment custody modifications, and post-decree contempt actions) with proper disclaimers. We solicited and added four client testimonials, all describing her communication style rather than case outcomes.

Tracking: Set up CallRail with five tracking numbers, one per major directory. Cost: $59 per month. Configured form-submission alerts to her phone via SMS.

Engagement: She committed to responding to any directory inquiry within one hour during business hours and within three hours otherwise. Her paralegal handled overflow.

Diligence: Scheduled a quarterly audit on her calendar. We also identified one directory (a regional Tennessee-Kentucky business listing site she had been paying $480 a year for) that had produced zero inquiries in two years. Cancelled.

Results after ninety days

Metric

Baseline

After 90 days

Change

Directory-attributed calls

14

31

+121%

Form submissions

6

19

+217%

Consultations booked

5

17

+240%

Retained matters

2

7

+250%

Estimated revenue

$8,400

$29,500

+251%

Directory spend

$2,340

$2,037

-13%

The big surprise was the spend going down, because we cut the dead listing. M. was also more selective about which consultations she took, which I think contributed to a higher retain-to-consult ratio. Not all of this is attributable to the framework alone; she also got two referrals during the period that probably checked her improved listings before calling. But the directional shift was clear.

What if… you applied LISTED but your inquiry volume actually went down in the first 60 days? This happens occasionally when narrowing practice area focus. The right response is to wait the full 90 days before judging, because the listings need crawl cycles to re-index, and your inquiry quality usually rises even as raw count temporarily dips. If volume is still down at day 90, audit your headline practice area phrasing first; it is almost always too narrow rather than too broad.

Edge cases and honest limitations

LISTED is not magic. There are situations where the framework will not move the needle, and I would rather you know now than after spending 25 hours on it.

When the framework underperforms for niche practices

If you practise in an area with very low search volume (say, agricultural water rights, or specific subsections of municipal bond law), directory listings will not drive meaningful inquiry volume because nobody is searching that language. You need a different channel: bar association committee work, CLE speaking, targeted publication writing. I have seen niche practitioners spend months tuning directory copy when their time would have been better spent writing one well-placed Kentucky Bench & Bar article. For broader marketing channels including general business directories, resources like the Web Directory can supplement legal-specific platforms, but they will not replace targeted bar publications for niche audiences.

Multi-state firms and jurisdictional conflicts

If your firm has offices in Kentucky and Tennessee (common in the I-65 corridor), each state’s bar advertising rules apply to the listings visible in that state. Tennessee Rule 7.1 differs subtly from Kentucky’s SCR 3.130(7.02). You either need separate listings or copy that satisfies both regimes. The latter is harder than it sounds. I have watched two multi-state firms get warning letters from the Kentucky Bar’s advertising commission over copy that was perfectly fine in Tennessee.

Myth: A single national directory listing covers you in every state you practise. Reality: The listing might be visible everywhere, but you are responsible for compliance with the advertising rules of every jurisdiction where the listing is accessible. Kentucky’s rules are stricter than many neighbouring states’, so default to Kentucky-compliant copy if in doubt.

What directories cannot fix about your firm

If your office is hard to reach by phone, if your intake process loses prospects, if your fee structure is genuinely uncompetitive, or if you have unresolved disciplinary issues on your record, directory tuning will not save you. I have had firms hire me to improve listings when their actual problem was that the receptionist sent calls to voicemail. No amount of LISTED is going to fix that. Sometimes the honest consulting answer is “your listings are fine; your phone-answering is the problem”.

Urban public square and surrounding historic architecture

Deliberate practice principles apply here too. The research on skill development (see Jeremiah Brown’s writing on deliberate practice) makes the point that practice creates carry-over benefits, but only when the underlying competency is sound. Polishing the storefront of a struggling practice will not generate referrals that survive the second meeting.

Did you know? Of the 40 Kentucky firms I audited, 9 had at least one listing with an incorrect phone number. Three had numbers that rang to disconnected lines. This is the first thing to check and the cheapest to fix.

Where to start this week

Pick one directory. The KBA’s official lawyer locator is the most defensible starting point because it is the one your prospects trust most and the one most likely to be checked during due diligence. Spend two hours applying just the L and I components of LISTED to that single listing. Confirm your KBA number is visible, your counties are mapped accurately, and your practice area copy says something specific enough that you would not feel embarrassed reading it aloud at a CLE.

Then set a calendar reminder for 30 days from now to add the S component, and another for 60 days out to set up tracking. Trying to do all of LISTED in one weekend is how this work gets abandoned in week three. Treat it like litigation: a sequence of motions, not a single hearing.

If you do nothing else this quarter, fix the phone number on every active listing and add county-specific service areas to the KBA profile. Those two changes have produced measurable inquiry lifts in every Kentucky engagement I have run since 2021, and they cost nothing but an afternoon.

I have audited roughly 40 Kentucky law firm profiles across various directories in the past three years, from solo practitioners in Paducah to twelve-attorney firms in Louisville.
