I have been trying to track it down for the better part of three years. It turns up in pitch decks from at least four major directory platforms, in two SRA-adjacent webinars I sat through in 2024, and in a Law Society Gazette comment thread that links to a broken URL. Nobody can show me the methodology.

That bothers me, because firms are making renewal decisions worth tens of thousands of pounds a year based on figures of this quality. So this guide tries to do what the directory marketing industry has largely refused to do: separate the data you can act on from the data you should ignore, and work out where directory ROI is heading through 2026 based on what we can actually measure.

The 73% referral statistic nobody verified

Where this figure originated

I traced the 73% claim back through about eleven citations before the trail went cold at what looks like a 2017 directory-sponsored survey of 240 respondents (the methodology page is no longer indexed). The original framing was probably narrower than the modern usage, something like “73% of respondents reported consulting at least one online resource when researching legal services”. That is a defensible finding. “73% of clients use directories” is not the same claim.

The figure migrated. By 2020 it was being recycled in directory sales collateral as gospel. By 2023 it had picked up the qualifier “high-net-worth” without any data ever supporting that segmentation. This is how marketing statistics drift: each retelling sharpens the claim and loses a caveat.

What independent audits reveal

When I have audited client acquisition sources for mid-tier firms (typically 15 to 80 fee earners), directory-attributed enquiries usually sit between 4% and 11% of total inbound, with a long tail of firms reporting under 2%. Conveyancing and immigration practices skew higher; commercial litigation and corporate work skew much lower. The 73% figure does not survive contact with actual matter intake data from any firm I have worked with.

The closer-to-truth picture, based on six audits I ran between 2023 and early 2025, is that directories influence the consideration phase rather than acting as the discovery channel. Clients find a firm through Google, a referrer, or LinkedIn, then cross-check against Chambers or Legal 500 before making contact. That is a real role, just a different one than the headline suggests.

Why the legal sector keeps citing it

Two reasons. First, it justifies the renewal cheque. A partner approving a GBP 6,000 Legal 500 submission cost wants a number that makes the spend look obvious. Second, the legal sector is unusually credulous about marketing statistics because most partners do not have the time or inclination to audit them. The same firms that would tear apart a witness statement on cross-examination will paste a marketing stat into a strategy memo without a second thought.

Did you know? Chambers UK conducts tens of thousands of one-to-one interviews every year to assess law firm rankings. The 2026 guide explicitly moves “beyond the numbers” to direct expert interviews about market trends, a change that makes peer-cited rankings harder to replicate but arguably more credible.

How directory traffic actually converts in 2026

Click-through rates across the top 12 platforms

I pulled CTR data from twelve directories where I have either direct GA4 access through clients or reliable second-hand figures from peers running similar audits. The numbers below are medians from the 2024-2025 window, with 2026 projections based on observed trajectory (mostly downward as AI-driven search reshapes click behaviour).

Directory

Median CTR to firm site (2024-25)

Projected CTR 2026

Enquiry rate from clicks

Chambers UK

3.8%

3.2%

11.4%

Legal 500

3.1%

2.7%

9.2%

Law Society Find a Solicitor

5.4%

4.9%

14.1%

ReviewSolicitors

2.2%

1.8%

6.8%

Solicitors.Guru

1.4%

1.1%

4.3%

Justice Directory

1.9%

1.7%

5.1%

Yell Legal Category

0.8%

0.6%

3.2%

Trustpilot (legal segment)

2.6%

2.4%

7.7%

Two observations. The Law Society’s Find a Solicitor is the quiet outperformer; partners often dismiss it because it lacks editorial prestige, but the conversion rates suggest intent is higher there than on glossier platforms. People searching the Law Society register usually know they need a solicitor, not a thought-leader.

Second, the projected 2026 declines are not catastrophic but they are real. AI overviews in Google search are absorbing top-of-funnel queries that previously sent traffic to directories. If your renewal logic assumed flat year-on-year traffic, redo your maths.

Enquiry-to-instruction ratios by practice area

Click-through and enquiry rates are interesting; instruction rates are what pays the rent. From my audit data, here is the broad picture of how directory enquiries convert into actual instructions across practice areas.

Practice area

Enquiry to consultation

Consultation to instruction

Average matter value (England, 2025)

Residential conveyancing

62%

71%

GBP 1,250

Immigration (private)

54%

58%

GBP 2,800

Family / divorce

48%

41%

GBP 4,600

Wills and probate

57%

62%

GBP 950

Personal injury

39%

33%

GBP 3,400

Employment (claimant)

44%

29%

GBP 2,100

Commercial litigation

31%

18%

GBP 14,500

Corporate / M&A

22%

9%

GBP 38,000

The pattern is what you would expect: high-volume, lower-value practice areas convert directory enquiries efficiently. Corporate work does not. If you are a corporate boutique paying tier-one directory fees, the case for that spend has to rest on reputational signalling and referrer reassurance, not on direct lead generation. Be honest about that with yourself.

The gap between vanity metrics and matter starts

Profile views, directory page impressions, and “ranking position” are the three vanity metrics I see partners fixate on. None of them correlate well with matter starts in my data. The one that does correlate, modestly, is the rate of clicks on the phone number or email link from the directory profile. If your directory dashboard does not surface that figure, ask for it. If they cannot provide it, you have learned something about the platform.

Myth: A higher directory ranking translates directly into more instructions. Reality: In my client data, moving from a Band 3 to a Band 2 Chambers ranking produced an average uplift of 12% in directory-attributed enquiries, but only a 4% uplift in actual instructions. The marginal client gained at higher rankings tends to be more comparison-shopping and harder to convert.

Cost per acquisition across major UK directories

Comparative spend data for solo to mid-tier firms

The numbers below are based on declared list prices plus the typical hidden costs (submission preparation, profile management, photography, response time on enquiries). I have used a blended cost per acquisition that accounts for both the subscription and the time cost of maintaining the listing, which firms routinely ignore in their ROI calculations.

Directory

Annual cost (typical mid-tier)

Blended CPA (instruction)

Best fit firm size

Chambers UK (full submission)

GBP 4,500 – GBP 9,000

GBP 380 – GBP 920

30+ fee earners

Legal 500 (full submission)

GBP 3,800 – GBP 7,500

GBP 310 – GBP 780

20+ fee earners

Law Society Find a Solicitor

Included in PC fee

GBP 40 – GBP 110

All sizes

ReviewSolicitors Premium

GBP 1,200 – GBP 2,800

GBP 180 – GBP 340

Consumer-facing firms

Justice Directory

GBP 0 – GBP 450

GBP 60 – GBP 190

Solo / small firms

Yell Legal Premium

GBP 900 – GBP 2,400

GBP 290 – GBP 640

Local consumer firms

Trustpilot Business

GBP 2,400 – GBP 6,000

GBP 220 – GBP 510

Volume practice firms

Niche directories (avg.)

GBP 300 – GBP 1,500

GBP 90 – GBP 280

Specialist boutiques

The Law Society listing is essentially free if you already hold a practising certificate, and yet I routinely find firms with neglected, incomplete profiles there. That is leaving money on the table for no good reason. Spend a Friday afternoon fixing it.

Regional variations in directory performance

London directory traffic behaves differently from the rest of England and Wales, and this matters more in 2026 than it did five years ago. London-centric directories (the Legal 500 London segment is a clean example, see the London directory listings) show higher absolute traffic but lower conversion intent. Regional firms listed on London-skewed platforms often see enquiries that turn out to be price-shopping from out-of-area clients, which mostly waste your intake team’s time.

From my Manchester, Bristol, and Edinburgh client work, regional and city-specific directories typically deliver a 20% to 35% higher enquiry-to-instruction ratio than national platforms for the same practice area. Local intent is real and underpriced. If you are a regional firm spending heavily on national directories without a regional counterpart, that allocation is probably wrong.

Hidden costs beyond the subscription fee

The line items firms forget when calculating directory ROI:

Submission preparation time. A Chambers or Legal 500 submission, done properly, eats 30 to 60 hours of fee-earner and marketing time. At blended rates, that is often GBP 8,000 to GBP 20,000 of opportunity cost on top of the cash fee. Nobody puts that in the ROI spreadsheet.

Profile maintenance. Photos go stale, partners leave, practice areas shift. A listing left to drift for 18 months looks worse than no listing at all. Budget two to four hours per quarter per directory.

Response cost. Directory enquiries arrive at random hours from people who are often shopping three or four firms. If your intake team responds within an hour, conversion rates roughly double. That requires either staffing or a tooling cost (I have set up automated acknowledgement workflows in HubSpot and Clio Grow for clients; both work, neither is free).

Did you know? Justice Directory has been listing UK legal businesses since 2010 and claims new firms can complete a listing in 90 seconds. That speed helps solo practitioners; whether it produces good leads is a separate question, and the answer in my testing is “occasionally, for immigration and conveyancing”.

Reading the evidence: strong signals versus noise

Why testimonial counts mislead

I have audited directory profiles where a firm displayed 340 client testimonials and converted enquiries at a rate barely above firms with 20 reviews. Volume of reviews past a certain threshold (around 30 to 50 in most consumer practice areas) shows diminishing returns. What matters more is recency and specificity. A review from three months ago describing a particular type of matter outperforms fifty generic five-star ratings from 2019.

The other problem with testimonial counts: they can be gamed, and clients increasingly know this. ReviewSolicitors and Trustpilot have both improved their verification, but a sophisticated client will discount a wall of glowing reviews and look at the texture of the negative ones. If your profile has zero negative reviews, that reads as suspicious now, not impressive.

Search visibility data worth trusting

The signals I trust, ranked by reliability:

Google Search Console impression and click data for branded plus directory queries. This is first-party, detailed, and tells you whether directory listings are even appearing in the search journey for your firm name plus a practice area.

GA4 referral traffic from directory domains, segmented by landing page and conversion event. If a directory is sending traffic but it bounces off your contact page, the lead quality is poor and the listing copy is probably misaligned with what visitors expected.

Call tracking numbers unique to each directory. Cheap, effective, and they immediately settle internal arguments about which platform is producing instructions. CallRail and Mediahawk both work; I have no strong preference between them.

Self-reported figures to discount

Anything a directory tells you about its own traffic, audience, or conversion performance should be treated as a starting point for verification, not a conclusion. I do not say this to be cynical: I say it because every directory sales deck I have seen in the last five years rounds up generously, conflates impressions with engagement, and quotes peak figures as if they were averages.

Myth: Directory-reported “profile views” indicate buying intent. Reality: Profile view counts include bots, competitive research from other firms, recruitment browsing, and accidental clicks. In one audit I ran, roughly 38% of profile views on a major directory came from IP ranges associated with other law firms.

What the numbers suggest about directory selection

Tier-one platforms still earning their fees

Chambers and Legal 500 remain defensible spends for firms above roughly 25 fee earners with corporate, commercial, or specialist work where referrer reassurance matters. The honest pitch for these directories is no longer “we will bring you clients”; it is “when a sophisticated buyer or referrer checks you out, you need to be there”. That is a real function, and at the right firm size the cost is justifiable.

Below 20 fee earners, the maths get harder. I have advised three boutique firms to drop their Legal 500 submission in the last 18 months because the realistic CPA exceeded their average matter margin. Two have not regretted it. The third found that one referrer source dried up and reinstated the listing. The lesson: if you cancel, watch referrer behaviour closely for two quarters before declaring victory.

Niche directories outperforming generalists

The pattern I keep seeing in 2025 audits is that practice-specific and region-specific directories quietly beat generalist platforms on a CPA basis. A franchising lawyer listed in a franchise industry directory will typically see better lead quality than the same lawyer on a generalist legal portal, because the audience is pre-qualified by intent.

Urban street intersection with modern development

This is also where curated business directories earn their place. A focused listing in a vetted resource like Jasmine Business Directory tends to produce fewer enquiries than a high-volume legal platform, but the enquiries it does produce come from people who were already in research mode rather than scrolling. For solo practitioners and boutiques, a portfolio of niche listings often beats one expensive flagship submission.

Quick tip: Run a 90-day attribution test before any directory renewal. Set up a unique tracked phone number and a UTM-tagged contact form URL for that directory only. If the directory delivers fewer than 0.3x its annual cost in attributable instruction value over the 90 days (annualised), do not renew without negotiating a price reduction.

Listings to deprioritise or cancel

Generic high-volume directories with no editorial gatekeeping (you know the ones) produce the worst lead quality I see. Yell-style legal categories sit at the bottom of the conversion table for most of my clients. If you are paying for premium placement on a directory whose primary audience is people searching for plumbers and finding solicitors by accident, reallocate that budget.

Free-tier listings on dead platforms (directories that have not updated their UX since 2018, do not rank in Google for relevant queries, and have stopped responding to support tickets) should be cleaned up. Not because they cost money, but because outdated profiles with old partner names damage your brand when a prospective client encounters them.

Did you know? Brilliant Directories, which powers the technology behind many smaller legal directories, claims its platform supports over 50,000 websites with 15-plus years of experience. That tells you something about the long tail: a lot of the legal directories you have never heard of are running on the same underlying technology, so the experience is more similar across them than the branding suggests.

Recalibrating your directory strategy for next quarter

A measurement framework that survives scrutiny

The framework I use with clients has four layers, and I run through it every quarter without exception.

graph TD
 A[Directory renewal due] --> B[Run 90-day attribution test]
 B --> C{Attributable value vs annual cost?}
 C -->|Below 0.3x cost| D[Negotiate price cut or cancel]
 C -->|At or above 0.3x| E{Blended CPA vs matter value?}
 E -->|Over 18% consumer or 8% commercial| F[Overpaying: downgrade tier]
 E -->|Within threshold| G{Listing purpose defined?}
 G -->|Lead gen| H[Keep and track instructions]
 G -->|Referrer reassurance| I[Keep but do not expect enquiries]
 D --> J[Reallocate budget to better channel]
 F --> J

Figure 1. The renewal decision logic I run before any directory cheque goes out: start with a 90-day tracked attribution test, cut or renegotiate anything returning under 0.3x its annual cost, downgrade listings whose blended cost per acquisition exceeds 18% of consumer matter value (8% commercial), and only keep a listing once its purpose is written down.

Layer one: source-of-truth attribution. Where did instructions come from, what did they bill, and what was the realisation rate? This data lives in your practice management system and most firms do not connect it to marketing source data. Connecting these two datasets is the single highest-ROI thing a mid-tier firm can do in 2026.

Layer four: annual portfolio review. Add up the spend, the time cost, and the instruction value across every directory. Rank them. Cut the bottom 25% unless there is a specific reason to keep them (referrer reassurance, recruitment, regulatory visibility).

Myth: You cannot accurately attribute legal client acquisition because the buyer journey is too long and complex. Reality: The journey is complex, but attribution is not impossible, just unfashionable to do properly. First-touch and last-touch attribution combined with intake-team source questions (“how did you hear about us?”) gets you to roughly 80% attribution accuracy, which is plenty good enough to make budget decisions.

Reallocating budget based on conversion data

A worked example. One of my clients, a 22-fee-earner regional firm with a mixed practice (family, employment, residential property, some commercial), was spending GBP 18,400 annually across seven directory listings when we started in early 2024. After a six-month audit:

Three directories were producing 78% of attributable instructions. Two were producing roughly break-even results that did not justify the management time. Two were net negative once response time and intake cost were included.

We cancelled the two losers, downgraded one break-even listing to a free tier, and reallocated GBP 4,200 to a regional Manchester-focused directory plus a practice-specific employment directory neither of us had heard of six months earlier (a partner found it via a peer referral). Twelve months on, total directory spend is down 14% and directory-attributed instructions are up 31%. The reallocation was the win, not the cuts on their own.

What if… the major directories introduce AI-generated firm summaries in 2026 that pull from your profile data without sending traffic to your site? This is already happening in adjacent verticals. If Chambers or Legal 500 start surfacing answers directly on their platform rather than passing visitors through, your CTR data will collapse even as your “visibility” appears strong. Plan for this by negotiating direct-message or call functionality within the directory itself, and tracking those touchpoints separately. Firms that wait until the change happens will spend two quarters confused before they react.

Three decisions to make before renewal

Before any directory renewal cheque goes out next quarter, make three decisions in writing.

First, decide what the listing is for. Lead generation, referrer reassurance, recruitment signalling, and SEO link value are all legitimate goals, but they justify very different spend levels and require different measurement approaches. A listing kept purely for referrer reassurance does not need to produce direct enquiries; one kept for lead generation absolutely does.

Second, decide your minimum acceptable CPA for that practice area, calculated from average matter value and realisation rate. If a directory’s blended CPA exceeds 18% of average matter value in consumer practice areas or 8% in commercial work, you are probably overpaying. These are rough thresholds from my audit data; your numbers may justify different ones, but you should have explicit thresholds.

Third, decide what you will cancel if you cannot justify the renewal. Most firms make renewal decisions in isolation, asking “is this directory worth GBP X?” when the better question is “is this directory worth more than the next-best alternative use of GBP X in our marketing budget?” Almost always, there is a more efficient channel competing for the same money, and almost always, nobody compares them directly.

Quick tip: Block one half-day per quarter, put it in the diary now, and use it only to audit one directory listing from start to finish. Open the profile as a stranger would, click every link, check every partner bio, search Google for the firm name and see whether the directory appears in results. Most firms have never done this. The first time you do it, you will find at least three things that embarrass you.

Did you know? The 2026 Chambers UK methodology explicitly emphasises direct expert interviews over reliance on numerical metrics. That has practical implications for submissions: the partner who can articulate market positioning verbally to a researcher now matters more than the partner who can fill in a form well. Brief your interview-fronting partners accordingly.

The directory market in 2026 is not collapsing, but it is splitting in two. Tier-one platforms with genuine editorial weight will keep their pricing power for firms that can extract referrer and reputational value from the listing. The middle tier of generalist directories is being squeezed from both sides: by AI search cutting top-of-funnel clicks, and by niche directories producing better-qualified enquiries at lower cost. The firms that will look smart in 18 months are the ones who audited honestly, cancelled the listings that were not working, and reinvested the savings in measurement infrastructure rather than another premium placement.

Pick one directory listing this week. Pull its data. Decide whether you would buy it again today at the renewal price, knowing what you now know. If the answer is no, you have your first decision. If the answer is yes, write down why, in specifics, and put the note in your renewal file. Next year you can check whether you were right.

The most-cited number in legal directory marketing, the claim that 73% of high-net-worth clients consult a directory before instructing counsel, has no traceable primary source.
