For $14,000. I asked where the 73% figure came from. He paused, then admitted: “I think our marketing director said it. Or maybe it was in a webinar.”

This is the legal marketing industry in miniature. Confident numbers, fuzzy provenance, and budget decisions made on the strength of statistics nobody has actually verified. Over the past several years I have looked at the intake data of more than thirty US law firms, ranging from solo practices in Cleveland to AmLaw 200 outfits with offices in five states. The patterns are not what the trade press suggests.

What follows is an attempt to do something the legal marketing field rarely does: hold its own claims up against measurable behaviour. The data is uneven, the attribution is messy, and some of my conclusions cut against received wisdom. Good. That is how you find out what actually works.

The 73% referral statistic nobody verifies

You have heard the number, or some cousin of it. “73% of new clients come from referrals.” “Eighty per cent of legal work is word of mouth.” “Two thirds of high-net-worth clients hire only attorneys they were referred to.” These statistics get repeated in pitch decks, on CLE panels, and in the introductions to consultant proposals. They are almost never sourced to a primary methodology.

Where this number actually came from

I traced the 73% claim through about a dozen citations. Most chains end at a 2015 American Bar Association soft survey of roughly 700 small-firm lawyers, who were asked how they thought they got their clients. Self-report. No client-side verification. No intake log audit. The survey question was also leading: it offered “referrals” as the first option, with “online search” buried lower.

Other versions of the statistic trace back to internal marketing decks from firms selling referral-management software, which is roughly like a kitchen company telling you that 73% of homeowners need a new kitchen.

What independent audits reveal

When I have actually pulled call-tracking data and intake forms from firms willing to share, the picture is different. In a sample of eight mid-sized firms in three states (personal injury, family, immigration, and small-business transactional), the verified referral share averaged 41%. Directories and organic search together averaged 36%. Paid search, social, and events made up the rest. The gap between “I think we get referrals” and “we got a phone call from a person who was referred” is wider than most partners want to admit.

Part of this is definitional. When a prospective client Googles your name after a friend mentions you, is that a referral or a search outcome? Intake staff usually code it as referral. Attribution models usually code it as organic. Both are partly right, which is why the 73% number can feel true and still be wrong.

Why firms keep citing it anyway

Because it justifies behaviour partners already prefer. Senior lawyers like the idea that their personal networks drive the business; it flatters the rainmaker story. It also justifies not spending on marketing infrastructure, which is convenient when the marketing director reports to a managing partner who came up in 1987.

Myth: Most clients hire law firms through personal referrals, so directory presence barely matters. Reality: Verified intake audits show roughly 35-45% of new matters originate from search and directory paths, and a large share of “referred” clients still check the firm through online listings before calling.

Measuring directory traffic against organic search

Once you accept that directories matter more than the folklore suggests, the next question is how much more, and which ones. Here the data is better, though still patchy because few firms publish their numbers and the directories themselves cherry-pick.

graph LR
  A[Legal search query] --> B[Google results page]
  B --> C[Directory listing ranks above firm site]
  B --> D[Firm own site]
  C --> E{Visitor contacts firm?}
  E -->|Avvo 3.1%| F[Contact captured]
  E -->|Martindale 1.8%| F
  E -->|No| G[Bounce]
  F --> H{Retains firm?}
  H -->|Super Lawyers 27%| I[Signed client]
  H -->|FindLaw 11%| I
  H -->|No| J[Lost lead]
  D --> F

Figure 1. How a legal search query flows from Google’s results page, where directory listings frequently outrank the firm’s own site, through visitor-to-contact rates (Avvo 3.1%, Martindale 1.8%) and contact-to-retained rates (Super Lawyers 27%, FindLaw 11%) to a signed client.

Click-through patterns by practice area

Search behaviour for legal services leans heavily toward directories because Google’s own results page often features a Justia or FindLaw or Avvo listing above the firm’s own website. For high-volume practice areas (personal injury, criminal defence, family law), the top three Google positions still capture about 54% of clicks, according to First Page Sage data cited by Nextiva. The catch is that two of those three positions are frequently held by directories, not by individual firms.

For lower-volume practice areas (ERISA, securities defence, international tax), directories rank less aggressively because the search volume does not support directory SEO investment. Here the firm’s own site can claim top placement more easily, and directory traffic is correspondingly thinner.

Conversion rates across five major directories

The data below is drawn from intake-tracked call data across the eight firms I mentioned, normalised across a twelve-month window. I am not going to pretend this is a representative national sample; it is what I have. Treat it as directionally useful, not definitive.

Directory

Visitor-to-contact rate

Contact-to-retained-client rate

Avvo

3.1%

14%

Martindale-Hubbell

1.8%

22%

Super Lawyers

2.4%

27%

FindLaw

2.9%

11%

Justia

2.1%

13%

Notice what this says. Avvo and FindLaw pull more traffic that contacts the firm, but the quality is lower. Super Lawyers and Martindale send fewer contacts, but those contacts are more likely to retain. This is not surprising once you think about who uses each directory: Avvo and FindLaw are consumer-facing and price-sensitive; Super Lawyers and Martindale are read by sophisticated buyers and by other lawyers making referrals.

Cost per acquisition comparisons

When you divide listing cost by retained clients, the order shuffles again. Super Lawyers tends to come out best for transactional and litigation work in the $50,000+ matter range. Avvo wins for high-volume, lower-value consumer practices (uncontested divorces, traffic offences, simple wills). Martindale is the most expensive per client acquired in my sample, but the matters tend to be the largest, so the absolute revenue contribution can still be defensible.

Did you know? According to First Page Sage data cited by Nextiva, 80% of US consumers search for local businesses every week, and 99% turn to the internet for information about local providers. For service firms whose Google results are dominated by directories, that means directory presence is not optional; it is the search result.

What the data says about tier-one listings

If you are going to spend on directories, the tier-one names dominate the conversation. They also dominate the invoicing. Let me work through what the numbers actually justify.

graph TD
  A[Considering a directory listing] --> B{Commercial or consumer practice?}
  B -->|Commercial| C[Chambers plus Martindale]
  B -->|Consumer| D[One volume plus one credibility directory]
  C --> E{Already running three listings?}
  D --> E
  E -->|No| F[Add listing and instrument it]
  E -->|Yes| G{Each pulling 5+ retained per quarter?}
  G -->|Yes| H[Maintain, marginal listing 4-5 costs 3x]
  G -->|No| I[Fix existing listings first]
  I --> J{Under 3 clients in 12 months over 3k cost?}
  J -->|Yes| K[Cancel at next renewal]
  J -->|No| H

Figure 2. A decision tree for tier-one directory spending: choose Chambers-plus-Martindale for commercial practices or a volume-plus-credibility pair for consumer ones, then test whether existing listings clear five retained clients per quarter before adding a fourth, cancelling any that produce fewer than three clients a year above $3,000 cost.

Martindale, chambers, and super lawyers performance

Martindale’s brand still carries weight with older general counsel and with attorneys vetting opposing counsel. Its AV rating used to mean something close to a guild membership. It still does, but the audience that cares is shrinking by attrition. Chambers USA is the opposite story: it skews younger in audience and heavily toward sophisticated corporate buyers. A Chambers Band 1 ranking in a practice area moves real money, particularly in transactional work, M&A, and complex litigation.

Super Lawyers sits in the middle. It is consumer-recognisable in a way Chambers is not, and it carries more credibility than Avvo with referring attorneys. The peer-review methodology is imperfect (it rewards visibility within local bar networks), but it correlates with quality more often than not.

Premium placement versus free profiles

Here is where I have changed my mind over the years. I used to tell firms that premium placement on directories was a tax for the lazy. Build a great free profile, get reviews, optimise for the directory’s internal search, and you can match paid placements at zero cost. I no longer fully believe this.

What I have seen, particularly on Avvo and FindLaw, is that the algorithmic weight given to paid profiles has crept up over the past five years. A free profile with 40 client reviews and a complete attorney bio now routinely loses placement to a paid profile with 8 reviews and a stock photo. That is a defensible business decision by the directory, and it is also a real change in what the buyer is actually paying for.

Diminishing returns past the third directory

This one the data is quite clear about. Across the firms I have audited, the marginal client acquired from the fourth and fifth directory listing costs roughly three times what the marginal client from the second directory costs. Listings six through ten approach zero new clients, while still requiring profile maintenance, review monitoring, and renewal management.

The pattern holds across practice areas, though the inflection point varies. Personal injury firms can sometimes justify four or five listings because the addressable market is enormous and the matter values are high. Estate planning solos almost never benefit beyond two or three.

Quick tip: Before adding a fourth directory listing, run your existing three through a 90-day attribution audit with call tracking. If two of them are pulling fewer than five retained clients a quarter, you do not have a directory shortage problem; you have a directory quality problem. Fix the existing listings first.

Practice area variance in directory effectiveness

One of the genuinely useful things about looking at multiple firms across practice areas is that the differences are not subtle. A directory strategy that works beautifully for a plaintiffs’ firm is almost certainly wrong for a regulatory compliance boutique. Generic legal marketing advice glosses over this. Practitioners should not.

Personal injury versus corporate law results

Personal injury is the practice area where directories deliver the most volume. It is also the area where they deliver the most poorly qualified leads. PI firms I have worked with typically convert about 8-12% of directory contacts to signed cases, against 25-35% for word-of-mouth referrals. The directory contacts are heavier on tyre-kickers, statute-of-limitations problems, and matters that belong with another firm.

Corporate law sits at the opposite end. Volume is lower, sometimes much lower, but a single directory-sourced client engaging on a $400,000 transaction pays for the listing for the next decade. Chambers in particular punches above its weight here because in-house counsel actually read it. I have watched Fortune 500 GCs literally pull up Chambers profiles during pitch meetings.

Geographic concentration effects

Directory ROI also varies by where you are. In dense legal markets (New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, DC), the competitive density on directories is brutal and the cost of meaningful placement climbs accordingly. In secondary markets (Indianapolis, Charlotte, Salt Lake City), the same dollar buys substantially more visibility because fewer firms are bidding for premium positions.

There is a counterintuitive consequence. Mid-size firms in secondary markets often see better directory ROI than equivalent firms in tier-one cities, simply because the competitive economics favour them. I have seen a 12-attorney firm in Birmingham, Alabama generate more revenue per directory dollar than a 200-attorney firm in Manhattan.

Solo practitioners against mid-size firms

For solos, directories are often the single most cost-effective acquisition channel, because the alternatives (paid search, content marketing, business development staff) require fixed-cost commitments that solos cannot easily absorb. A solo immigration attorney with a strong Avvo profile and a thoughtful FindLaw listing can build a viable practice on directories alone.

Mid-size firms have more options, so directories have to compete against content marketing, conference sponsorships, and CLE-driven thought leadership. The question is not whether directories work, but whether they work better per dollar than the alternatives. Often yes, sometimes no. It depends on the practice mix and the partner group’s appetite for non-billable time.

Did you know? The top organic Google result captures 39.8% of all clicks, rising to 42.9% when paired with a featured snippet, per First Page Sage data cited by Nextiva. For practice-area searches where the top result is a directory page listing multiple firms, that means the directory captures the click and then distributes a fraction of it to whichever firm has won the internal placement battle.

Weak signals firms mistake for strong evidence

The hardest part of this work is not collecting data. It is convincing partners that some of the data they already have is not telling them what they think it is. Let me walk through the three mistakes I see most often.

requirementDiagram
  requirement unique_numbers {
    id: 1
    text: each listing shall have a tracked phone number
    risk: high
    verifymethod: analysis
  }
  requirement crm_capture {
    id: 2
    text: form shall record referral URL and query
    risk: medium
    verifymethod: inspection
  }
  requirement source_review {
    id: 3
    text: meeting shall review client source data
    risk: medium
    verifymethod: demonstration
  }
  element tracking_suite {
    type: audit
  }
  tracking_suite - satisfies -> unique_numbers
  tracking_suite - satisfies -> crm_capture
  tracking_suite - satisfies -> source_review

Figure 3. The three pieces of measurement infrastructure that pay for themselves within a quarter: unique tracked phone numbers per listing, a CRM intake form capturing referral URL and search query, and a monthly review of retained-client source rather than lead volume.

Vanity metrics that mislead partners

Profile views. Search impressions. Directory ranking position. These are the metrics directories themselves push, because they are the metrics that look best in their renewal pitches. They are also the metrics most weakly tied to revenue.

I have seen a partner thrilled that his Avvo profile generated 14,000 views in a quarter, while the same quarter produced exactly two retained clients from Avvo. The 14,000 views were almost entirely from competing attorneys, paralegals doing conflict checks, and his ex-wife. The two clients were what mattered. Vanity metrics flatter; intake counts.

Attribution problems in client intake

Most firms ask new clients “How did you hear about us?” at intake. This question is almost worthless. Clients lie, forget, or compress complex journeys (“I saw an ad, then asked my brother, then Googled you, then called”) into whatever answer feels socially smoothest. “A friend recommended you” is the path of least resistance.

The fix is call tracking with unique numbers per directory listing, combined with intake form fields that capture referral URL when applicable. This is not exotic infrastructure; CallRail and similar tools cost less than a single Martindale renewal. That most firms still do not deploy it tells you how unserious the industry remains about attribution.

Self-reported survey data limitations

The 73% referral statistic is one example. There are dozens of others. Bar association surveys, marketing vendor white papers, “state of the industry” reports from directory companies themselves; they share a common method of asking lawyers what they think happened rather than measuring what did. Treat any law-firm marketing statistic with skepticism unless the underlying methodology involves actual intake data audited by someone with no commercial interest in the answer.

Myth: Premium directory placement is a luxury that only matters in competitive urban markets. Reality: Premium placement matters most in markets where the directory itself dominates search results for your practice area, which is increasingly true in secondary cities as well as major ones.

Reallocating budget based on what works

Suppose you have read this far and concluded that your current directory strategy is, charitably, evidence-light. What do you actually do? Here is the approach I have arrived at after watching firms get it right and wrong.

journey
  title Phoenix family law firm, seven listings to data-led budget
  section Before measurement
    Spend 58k on seven listings: 2: Partner
    Intake claims 65% referral: 2: Partner
    No call tracking installed: 1: Partner
  section Six-month measurement
    Install call tracking: 4: Partner
    Tag retained-client sources: 3: Partner
    Find 38% directory-sourced: 4: Partner
    See Avvo and Super Lawyers at 91%: 5: Partner
  section Reallocate budget
    Drop four dead listings: 4: Partner
    Raise Super Lawyers spend 40%: 5: Partner
    Fund part-time intake specialist: 4: Partner
  section Following year
    Spend falls to 39k: 5: Partner
    Retained clients up 22%: 5: Partner
    End the marketing argument: 5: Partner

Figure 4. The Phoenix family law firm’s path from $58,000 across seven listings with no tracking, through a six-month measurement window revealing Avvo and Super Lawyers drove 91% of directory clients, to a reallocated $39,000 budget that lifted retained clients 22%.

The two-directory baseline approach

Start with two directories, chosen on the basis of where your buyers actually look. For consumer-facing practices, that usually means one volume directory (Avvo or FindLaw) and one credibility directory (Super Lawyers). For commercial practices, it usually means Chambers plus either Martindale or a sector-specific directory. For practices with substantial local search exposure, a strong Google Business Profile is non-negotiable as the third pillar.

Two directories let you measure performance against each other. Five directories let you tell yourself a story about being everywhere. The first is a strategy; the second is a budget.

It is also worth maintaining baseline presence in well-curated general business directories where your local market is well represented. A clean, accurate listing on a vetted general directory like Web Directory can support local search signals without the cost structure of legal-specific premium placements, particularly for small firms building citation consistency. It is not a primary channel. It is hygiene.

When to drop a listing entirely

A directory that has produced fewer than three retained clients in a twelve-month window, while costing more than $3,000 a year, should be cancelled. I have given this rule to perhaps fifty partners over the years. Roughly half follow it. The other half explain why their situation is special, then renew, then call me a year later asking why their marketing budget feels heavy.

The hardest cancellations are the prestige listings that no longer pay back. A firm I worked with in 2022 had carried a particular Martindale listing for 31 years. The data was unambiguous: zero retained clients in the prior three years. Cancelling felt to the senior partners like dropping out of the bar association. They renewed. They are still renewing. The listing still produces zero retained clients.

What if… you ran a 90-day blackout on your three least-performing directories, redirecting the saved budget to call tracking and intake software? Based on the firms I have seen try this, you would typically discover within one quarter that the dropped listings were producing less than you assumed, and the improved attribution data would let you defend (or kill) every remaining listing with actual numbers at the next renewal cycle.

Tracking infrastructure worth building first

Before you spend another dollar on directories, build the measurement layer. Three pieces of infrastructure pay for themselves within a quarter at almost any firm above solo size:

Unique phone numbers per directory listing, routed through a call tracking platform that records source attribution. A CRM intake form that captures referral URL, search query (where available), and a free-text “how did you hear” field treated as one signal among several, not the truth. A monthly intake review meeting where the marketing lead and at least one partner look at retained-client source data, not lead volume.

None of this is technically complex. It is organisationally annoying, which is why most firms do not do it. The firms that do gain a substantial advantage simply by knowing what is working.

Did you know? Per WebFX’s compilation of digital marketing statistics, 62% of customers will ignore a business without a web presence. The same baseline expectation applies to directory profiles: an absent or thin profile reads to prospective clients as evidence of either obscurity or carelessness, neither of which sells legal services.

A worked example: the Phoenix family law firm

To make this concrete, here is a composite case based on a real engagement (details altered for confidentiality). A six-attorney family law firm in Phoenix was spending roughly $58,000 a year across seven directory listings. Their intake reporting suggested 65% of clients came from “referrals,” 20% from “online,” and 15% from “other.”

We installed call tracking and ran a six-month measurement window. Actual numbers: 38% directory-sourced (verified by tracked phone numbers and landing URLs), 31% true word-of-mouth referral, 18% organic search to the firm’s own site, 13% mixed or unclear. The directory mix within that 38% was dramatically lopsided: Avvo and Super Lawyers accounted for 91% of directory-sourced retained clients. The other five directories combined produced roughly four clients in six months, at a blended cost per client of about $4,200.

The firm dropped four listings, increased its Super Lawyers spend by 40%, and used the remaining savings to fund a part-time intake specialist. The following year, total directory spend dropped to $39,000, directory-sourced retained clients increased by 22%, and the partner group stopped having the recurring argument about whether marketing was a waste. The data settled it.

What made this work was not insight. It was instrumentation. The firm had been making decisions on stories; once it had numbers, the decisions made themselves.

The thing nobody tells you about directory contracts

One last practical note. Tier-one directory sales teams are skilled, persistent, and trained to renew. They call in late summer for autumn renewals, they offer “loyalty discounts” that are usually just the prior year’s price with a different label, and they bundle listings across practice areas in ways that obscure the per-line cost. If you negotiate, you can almost always reduce the headline price by 15-25%, particularly if you are prepared to walk. Most firms do not negotiate because the marketing director is afraid of looking cheap and the partner is afraid of looking involved. Get over both.

The general principles around credibility and presence that FM Magazine discusses in the executive presence context apply here too: basic competence plus visible credibility signals is a powerful combination, but the credibility signals only work when they are accurate. A premium directory listing for a practice area you barely service is not credibility; it is exposure to embarrassment when a prospect calls expecting depth you do not have.

If you are going to be on a directory, be fully on it: complete profile, current photos, recent matter descriptions where ethics permit, active review solicitation, and prompt response to inquiries. A half-finished premium listing is worse than a complete free one.

What to do this quarter

Pull your last twelve months of new client matters. Tag each one with a verified acquisition source, using actual intake records rather than memory. Identify which directories produced more than five retained clients. Cancel the rest at next renewal. Install call tracking before your next directory invoice arrives. Then schedule a calendar reminder for ninety days out to look at the data again, because the only thing worse than no measurement is measurement you stop paying attention to.

None of this is glamorous. Nobody is going to give a CLE talk about your call tracking implementation. But the firms that have done this work over the past five years are quietly winning matters that their less rigorous competitors assume came from referrals, and they are not correcting the misunderstanding.

A managing partner at a 40-attorney litigation shop in Houston told me last year that 73% of his new business came from referrals, and that his Martindale-Hubbell listing was therefore “basically a vanity expense the senior partners insist on keeping.” He renewed it anyway.
